Can I use excess financial aid student loan money as my income?

I have in the past. I would purchase my books at whatever else with my own funds then get refunded the leftover financial aid, which is technically for cost of living.

No. Technically financial aid is to be used for expenses related to higher education. Also income is generally a recurring event which can vary from hourly, to daily, and so on to monthly, whereas financial aid is usually a one lump sum amount per school year or semester, etc. Although there are several different types of financial aid that you could apply for and if you qualify they each pay based on their own particular terms and schedules. Long answer but I hope it helps.
