The $23 Aldi Grocery Run That's Way Cheaper Than My Usual Target Trip

A grocery run doesn’t have to make a noticeable dent in your budget. But if you’re stocking up on everyday staples, where you shop can make a big difference if you’re looking to save money.

MoneyLion compared a bunch of common grocery items at Aldi and Target to see how much money you could save shopping. Even if the price difference is smaller, your savings will add up when you shop for groceries every week.

  • Aldi: $3.95

  • Target: $8.99

Aldi sells a dozen brown Grade-A Goldhen large pasture-raised eggs for $3.95. Target's Vital Farms offers similar large brown eggs for $8.99, more than double for the same pasture-raised label. If you buy a carton every week, Aldi could save you roughly $260 a year.

  • Aldi: $3.29 per pound

  • Target: $3.99 per pound

A pound of Kirkwood chicken breast at Aldi costs $3.29 a pound, while Target's Good & Gather chicken breast is $3.99 per pound. That’s a 70-cent-per-pound difference that adds up fast on a family-size pack.

  • Aldi: $2.79

  • Target: $2.99 (regularly $3.39)

Pay attention, households that consume Greek yogurt almost every day as a healthy snack. A 32-ounce Aldi’s Friendly Farms nonfat plain Greek yogurt costs $2.79, or 9 cents an ounce. Target Good & Gather Greek yogurt is $3.39 or 11 cents an ounce. Even on sale it's 20 cents more than at Aldi, which offers better savings at regular price.

  • Aldi: $1.45

  • Target: $1.59

Aldi’s L’oven fresh white bread costs $1.45. The same 20-ounce purchase of Target's Market Pantry white bread is $1.59, a smidge more. If you make sandwiches regularly, that difference can mean more savings over time: maybe just $1.50 saved per year, but that's exactly the difference between another loaf of bread or not.

  • Aldi: $5.99

  • Target: $7.69

Simply Nature organic grass-fed 85% lean ground beef from Aldi costs $1.70 less than Target's Good & Gather 85/15 ground beef. Interestingly, Aldi’s option is also organic and grass-fed, making it a great buy.

  • Aldi: $3.49 (six-count)

  • Target: $3.39 (four-count)

At first glance, Target seems slightly cheaper. But the six-pack of avocados from Aldi come out to approximately 58 cents per unit, versus Good & Gather avocados for 85 cents each in Target's four-pack. If you regularly buy several avocados, Aldi gives you more avocados for your money.

  • Aldi: $0.15 each (estimated)

  • Target: $0.39 each

Bananas at Aldi are sold by weight, going for an estimated 15 cents each. A Good & Gather fresh banana at Target is about 39 cents each, more than double the price for a single nanner at Aldi.
