5 Areas Where TJ Maxx Always Beats Department Store Prices

You already know TJ Maxx is where deals go to party. But here's the truth: not every tag with a strikethrough price is actually a bargain worth your money.

That "compare at" price printed on those red tags? It's TJ's reference point. Sometimes it's solid, and sometimes it's suspiciously generous. The real question is whether the discount actually matches what you'd pay at a real department store.

So, we dug through TJ Maxx's most shelves to find six product categories where the savings legitimately stack up. These are the spots where you're looking at 30% to 70% off department store prices. Here's where to hunt.

Luxury serums and creams get marked down 20% to 45% at TJ Maxx, which is genuinely wild for skincare that normally costs more than your monthly coffee budget.

A 0.5-ounce bottle of Elemis Pro collagen renewal serum runs $59.99 at TJ Maxx and has a "compare at" price of $105. At Macy's, the same product will cost you $110, so the TJ Maxx price saves you about 45%.

Perfume discounts swing anywhere from 25% to 50% below the comparison price depending on the brand and bottle size. For example, a 3.3-ounce Burberry Her London Dream eau de parfum is $89.99 at TJ Maxx with a $180 "compare at" price. The same size bottle runs $185 at Kohl's, which is double what TJ Maxx charges.

Kitchen tools and cutlery generally cost around 30% to 45% below the “compare at” prices, although some items were marked down more.

A nine-piece Zulay Kitchen teakwood utensil set is priced at $39.99 at TJ Maxx with a "compare at" price of $59.99. At Macy’s the same nine-piece set is reguarly $74.99, making the TJ Maxx price about 46% lower.

And if you're willing to buy slightly blemished items, the discounts get even steeper. TJ Maxx sells an All-Clad 7-piece knife block marked down for minor imperfections for $149 with a "compare at" price of $329. In this instance, the "compare at" price is extremely accurate, with Macy's selling the same product for $329.99.

Leather and suede handbags generally have a 30% to 50% difference between the TJ Maxx price and the comparison price.

This American Leather Co. Cleveland backpack is listed at $69.99 with a “compare at” price of $120. That’s a difference of about 42%. Macy’s has the same bag in a different color for $225, which means buying the TJ Maxx item would actually save shoppers 69%.

Name-brand swimsuits at TJ Maxx can sell for more than 50% below the listed "compare at" price.

A Hurley 2-piece terry floral triangle bikini set costs $14 at TJ Maxx, which is 59% lower than the "compare at" price of $34. At Dillards, a similar Hurley triangle bikini will cost you $50 for the top and $44 for the bottoms, for a grand total of $94. Shoppers could save closer to 85% by buying the set at TJ Maxx.
