Auto expert YouTuber Doug DeMuro recently did extensive research to uncover the five types of luxury SUVs that are cheap to own. Every vehicle mentioned is used and each model is a lot cooler than you might think. Let’s find out, in alphabetical order, which five SUVs made the cut.

1. Cadillac Escalade
DeMuro said the Cadillac Escalade is based on a pickup truck chassis and is body-on-frame. As a result, some of its interior equipment and feel of the car, such as the ride quality and maneuverability, comes up short against rival luxury SUVs like the Mercedes-Benz GLS. But the Cadillac Escalade does benefit from being a pickup that starts life on a ladder frame. This SUV uses pickup truck powertrains and suspension and is easy to work on.
Over the years, DeMuro said the Cadillac Escalade has managed to be three things. This vehicle is a luxury SUV with quality luxury features, it’s cool and it is reliable. It’s not uncommon to see Escalades put on 200- to 250,000 miles.
2. Lexus GX
The Lexus GX, DeMuro said, is the “final boss” of used, luxury SUVs. It may not be as luxurious or comfortable as some of its purpose-built European rivals, but it’s an upscale vehicle that’s quiet and cheap to own.
The GX benefits from having robust powertrains and being a body-on-frame, truck-based vehicle, which lends itself to more capability and reliability.
3. Mercedes-Benz G-Class
Also known as the G-Wagon, this vehicle is known for being a highly robust car especially if you’re able to buy one of the used W463 models.
DeMuro said it’s not uncommon to see G-Wagons pile on the miles, since they’re built for real driving use. Their motors have been used in many different types of cars which, as a result, means they’re easy to repair and find available parts (although the prices of parts tend to be expensive).
4. Porsche Cayenne (Second Generation, 2011-2018)
According to DeMuro, the lower in the model range you can go, the more reliable the Cayenne is going to be.
“The base early second-generation Cayennes have proven to be shockingly robust and reliable cars,” said DeMuro. This is made more surprising considering Porsche’s primary use case before the Cayenne was making sports cars that weren’t designed for daily use.
A second-generation used Cayenne V6 can be purchased for not much more than $10,000. As good of a deal as that sounds, DeMuro said to keep in mind the prices for parts won’t be cheap.
5. Toyota Land Cruiser
DeMuro calls out the 100 Series (sold from 1998-2007) as being the happy medium for luxurious, cheap and cool used SUVs to own.
“It is still cool to pull up anywhere in a Toyota Land Cruiser, which still has this reputation of being the ultimate SUV,” he said.
