Experts Weigh In: Can Mark Cuban's AI Bootcamps Build Wealth Through ChatGPT?

Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping how we communicate and work, and Mark Cuban wants to help ensure young people aren't left behind.

To prepare high school students for the future, the billionaire launched AI bootcamps that teach practical AI skills.

Cuban built much of his estimated $6 billion fortune by investing in technology ventures, and today's AI boom has many people wondering whether tools like ChatGPT can also help them build wealth. Here’s what experts say.

ChatGPT isn't meant to do the work for you. Instead, it enhances your skills and creativity, Cuban has said.

“AI is never the answer; AI is the tool,” Cuban said during a 2025 SXSW panel. While AI can write scripts and edit videos, it can’t discern what is a good or bad story, he noted, so “you need to be creative. Whatever skills you have, AI can amplify them.” AI expert Dr. A.K. Pradeep, CEO and founder of Sensori.ai, agrees that using ChatGPT to build wealth is not a get-rich-quick strategy. “AI will help you learn skills, perform jobs faster, find jobs, opportunities and gigs and enable you to become an entrepreneur fast or perform diagnostics and thoughtful strategic growth of your current business,” he said. “This is how AI will enable you to realize your dreams.”

AI isn't a shortcut to wealth, but it can help freelancers and other knowledge workers increase their earning potential, according to Jacob Bayer, CFP and founder of Jacob Bayer Wealth Management. "I see those who are truly benefiting from using AI to earn more money as freelancers who already have side hustles doing the same work as before — but now they're doing more of it with faster proposals, stronger deliverables and higher-quality marketing copy," Bayer said. "The biggest money-making advantage today is to do your existing paid work 30% faster."

AI can speed up efficiency, but experts warn that a quick payout likely won’t happen.

“If you have something that is worth its salt and are coming from zero, then you need to give it at least 12-18 months to really bring something to fruition,” said Jozef Gherman, the founder and CEO of XYZ AI and its flagship service, StealthGPT. Gherman also said early success can fade quickly unless users identify problems, adapt and keep improving.

There’s a lot of misunderstandings swirling around AI, like it’s a “money printing machine” and it’s not, Gherman said. “It has probably the highest ROI potential for a complete newbie more so than any other technology in history, but that doesn't mean you can type a few prompts and a check comes in the mail.”

Like any business, making money with AI takes time, persistence and marketable skills.

Chris Hutchins, founder and CEO of Hutchins Data Strategy Consulting, said one of the biggest misconceptions is that ChatGPT can generate passive income on its own. “The primary misconception is the belief that a large language model (LLM) can earn money on the user’s behalf while the user sleeps. ChatGPT is an amplified opinion generator. If you’re going to use it to create content, make sure you have a marketable skill, because without it, ChatGPT will produce unoriginal content.”

While AI can boost productivity, ChatGPT and other AI tools "can state information that is incorrect," Hutchins said.

Alexandra Hayes, GTM and AI product consultant at WA Web Sender, said users should also be mindful of what they share with AI platforms.

"Users must understand the privacy controls and policies of the platform they are using, along with their organization's policies, before uploading proprietary business data, confidential customer or client information or passwords," Hayes said.

She added that professionals should also be transparent with clients when AI has played a significant role in producing their work rather than presenting it as entirely human-created.

Experts agree that AI can create opportunities for those who use it smartly. “The financially successful people will not be the ones who master AI prompt engineering; they will be the ones who understand how to use AI to solve a problem that a customer is willing to pay to have solved,” Hayes explained. For those hoping to turn AI into a source of income, the consensus is clear: Treat ChatGPT as a productivity tool, not a shortcut to getting rich.
