How Much Budget Goes Toward Groceries and Gas in Every State

You’re more likely to feel the pinch of grocery and gas costs on a modest salary than if you earned six figures annually.
Key findings from a new MoneyLion study indicate states with lower median household incomes, especially those under $65,000, Americans spend a much higher percentage of their monthly income on groceries and gas compared to states where salaries are significantly higher.

To find out how much of a budget is allotted towards groceries and gas in every state, MoneyLion sourced each state’s median household income and the average cost of gas and groceries calculated on a monthly and annual basis. Using the 50/30/20 finance rule, the total cost of living for necessities was then doubled to find each state’s comfortable cost of living. After calculating the percentage of monthly household budget spent on groceries and gas, researchers scored and weighted each percentage at 1.00 to sum and sorted states in order of lowest percentage of budget spent on gas and groceries.
Key Findings
California, Hawaii and Massachusetts were top-ranked for spending the smallest percentage of their monthly budgets on groceries and gas. People in California (3.9%) and Hawaii (4%) spend the least on groceries while income spent on gas amounts to 1.6% (Hawaii) and 1.7% (Massachusetts) each month.
People living in West Virginia and Mississippi spend the most money on monthly grocery and gas costs. West Virginians put 8.4% of their monthly income towards groceries and 3.4% to gas. In Mississippi, this breaks down to 8% spent on groceries and 3.1% on gas.
Grocery costs eat up 7% of monthly incomes in 12 U.S. states: Kentucky (7.9%), Louisiana (7.7%), Arkansas (7.6%), Oklahoma, Alabama, Iowa (each 7.5%, respectively), Kansas, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana (each 7.3%, respectively), Nebraska (7.1%), and Missouri (7%).
Grocery and gas costs disproportionately impact budgets in many Southern and Midwest states. This is likely due to these states having a lower cost of living and subsequently lower incomes. West Virginia and Mississippi, which both scored high for spending the most monthly income on gas and groceries, each have median household incomes under $60,000.

Methodology: For this study, MoneyLion analyzed each U.S. state to find the average cost for groceries and gasoline for the average household. For each state several factors were sourced from the U.S. Census 2024 5-Year ACS including the total population, population ages 65 and over, total households, and median household income. The cost-of-living index was sourced from the Missouri Economic and Research Information Center and using the national average expenditure costs from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Survey, the average expenditure cost was calculated for each state. The average cost for gasoline and groceries was included, and the monthly and annual costs were calculated for each state. The single family home value was sourced from Zillow Home Value Index for August 2026. Assuming a 10% downpayment and using the national average 30-year fixed mortgage rate, as sourced from the Federal Reserve Economic Data, the average mortgage was calculated for each state. Using the average mortgage and expenditure costs, the total cost of living for necessities was calculated for each state. Using the 50/30/20 finance rule, the total cost of living for necessities was doubled to find the comfortable cost of living. Using the monthly comfortable cost of living as well as the monthly cost for gasoline and groceries, the percentage of the comfortable monthly cost of living was calculated for each cost. The percentage of monthly household budget spent on groceries and the percentage of monthly household budget spent on gasoline were both calculated for each state and were each scored and weighted at 1.00. The scores were summed and sorted to show the lowest percentage of budget spent on gasoline and groceries. All data is up to date as of September 28th, 2026.
