I Asked ChatGPT When To Book Summer Flights To Save the Most — Here's What It Said

Though you're road trip royalty, preferring to hit the road to save money, you can't exactly drive to Europe. You don't have enough PTO to drive across the country and back, so you've got to book a flight — and you're dreading the costs. Maybe there's a particular week or time frame where you can save the most money on your ticket.
Curious about the best time to purchase a flight ticket, I turned to ChatGPT. I asked the AI whether there was a peak week — or at least a generally advisable time — for booking affordable flights. ChatGPT couldn't give me a "magic bullet" in the form of a specific day or week, but it still offered some helpful advice.

The 'Golden Window' for Summer Flights
While ChatGPT was transparent that there was no ideal week for booking travel, it did offer me a "golden window" for saving money on summer flights. That sounds like great news — and it is, for next year's travel. ChatGPT said the "golden window" for cost savings has already passed for 2026, so you're better off planning for 2027. Oops.
Using insights from Expedia, ChatGPT provided an overall time frame for saving the most on tickets based on when you want to travel.
June Travel
Start tracking: January-February
Buy: March-April
Avoid waiting until May
July Travel
Start tracking: February-March
Buy: April-May
Avoid booking after mid-June
August Travel
Start tracking: March-April
Buy: May-June
"August itself is often one of the cheapest months of the summer season because demand begins to ease," ChatGPT said.
OK, so you might still be able to fit into the "golden window" for an August trip.
Days of the Week Can Matter — but Not the Way You Think
When it comes to saving money, ChatGPT said the day you book your flight doesn't matter as much as the day you actually fly out.
"Flying Tuesday instead of Sunday can reduce domestic airfare by roughly 14%, while Friday departures can be up to 8% cheaper than Sunday departures," the AI wrote.
Still, ChatGPT also said Friday is "often the cheapest overall" day to book a flight, followed by Tuesday and Wednesday. Conversely, Sunday is usually the most expensive.

OK, but What Do You Do if You're Planning Travel Now?
This is all well and good, but you're not planning your vacation for next summer — you're planning it now. So what's the ideal time frame for saving money while booking your flight?
The AI had some blunt words.
"The cheapest booking window has probably already passed, so the goal is no longer finding the perfect week to buy," ChatGPT wrote. "It's finding ways to reduce the damage from last-minute pricing."
Book Soon Rather Than Waiting
The AI warned me that, for most summer routes, prices tend to rise as departure gets closer — especially within 21 days of travel. Still, it did have some advice for minimizing the financial damage.
If the trip is:
Within two weeks: Book immediately.
Within three to six weeks: Start monitoring daily and be prepared to buy as soon as you see a reasonable fare.
Within six to eight weeks: You may still catch occasional sales, but don't wait for a miracle.
Shift Your Travel Dates
Showing flexibility with your travel dates can be a big money-saver at this stage, according to ChatGPT.
Examples:
Tuesday departure instead of Sunday: $50-$150+
Midweek round trip instead of weekend: $100-$300+
Flying early morning or late evening: often cheaper
Again, the AI wasn't promising a strategy that will always reduce your costs; it was providing an overview of options that can generally be more affordable.
Search One-Way Flights
ChatGPT said that although many people still assume a round-trip ticket is always cheaper, mixing airline carriers can sometimes help cut costs.
Use Fare Alerts for a Few Days
If travel is still four to eight weeks away, ChatGPT had a few tips for reducing your fare:
Set a Google Flights alert.
Watch for three to seven days.
Buy if prices drop.
The AI was clear: "Don't watch for a month hoping for a huge sale," it wrote.
The Bottom Line
So there's no perfect week of the year to buy a cheap plane ticket. And your best bet for saving money is still to plan several months ahead. But before you think all the news ChatGPT had to offer is bad, the AI did say that, with a willingness to act fast and stay flexible, you can alleviate some of the cost burden, even when booking later than ideal.
