Costco membership is often seen as a no-brainer for large families who shop in bulk. But if you’re single, that break-even point depends on how you shop, what you buy, and whether you're willing to think beyond the grocery aisle.

A basic Costco membership starts at $65 a year. That means you need to save roughly $5.42 a month to break even. Here are situations retail experts think Costco membership is worth it and when it’s not.

Buying in bulk is where Costco shines, but it’s also where single shoppers can lose money. Non-perishables, cleaning supplies, and frozen foods tend to offer the best value.

According to Greg Zakowicz, e-commerce and retail advisor at Omnisend, “Single shoppers don’t often purchase in bulk, but those who use products sold at Costco and are okay with pre-buying may choose to do so to save money and trips to the store.”

If you're already buying store-brand products at your regular grocery store, Costco's Kirkland Signature line is worth considering. Kirkland has built a cult following for a reason. The quality is consistently high, and the per-unit prices beat most competitors.

“Many consumers look to save by opting for private-label goods, and Costco’s Kirkland brand is a customer favorite,” Zakowicz said. “For single people who prefer these products versus other private labels, the membership may be worth it as long as you take advantage of other savings.”

Apart from groceries and household goods, Costco offers several other services that make a membership worth it. From optical and pharmacy to tire center services, these services alone are enough to break even.

“A single car repair may cover the cost of a yearly membership, so members with less reliable cars may find the membership to be well worth it,” Zakowicz said.

There’s also Costco Travel, which offers discounts on hotels, rental cars, and destination packages.

Single shoppers can get value from Costco, but not everyone will recoup the membership cost. According to Zakowicz, if you prefer shopping daily or a few times a week, buy mostly fresh food, or don't have storage space for bulk quantities, the membership is not worth it.
