50 Places With the Most Overpriced Homes

The average home value in the United States is around $367,000, while the median list price is about $400,000. The difference is about 9%.

But some cities have a much greater discrepancy, with homes priced as much as 60% over their value.

A new MoneyLion analysis reveals there’s a six-figure difference between home value and listing price in seven of America's largest housing markets. Homes are overpriced by more than $300,000 in two California cities: Salinas overpriced by $304,881 and Santa Maria overpriced by a dizzying $634,299.

MoneyLion found the 50 most overpriced markets by isolating the 200 largest cities for housing and sourcing each spot’s average home value and median listing price. From there, MoneyLion calculated the monetary and percentage difference between the home values and median list price.

  • Seven housing markets have homes overpriced by $100,000 or more. The markets and their dollar differences:

    1. Santa Maria ($634,299)

    2. Salinas ($304,881)

    3. Crestview, Florida ($239,439)

    4. Naples, Florida ($206,127)

    5. San Luis Obispo, California ($164,872)

    6. Cape Coral, Florida ($107,402)

    7. Daphne, Alabama ($103,979)

  • Homes are overpriced by 36% or more in the top six cities:

    1. Santa Maria (60%)

    2. Crestview (58.7%)

    3. Corpus Christi, Texas (44.5%)

    4. Brownsville, Texas (39.1%)

    5. Longview, Texas (36.4%)

    6. Tuscaloosa, Alabama (36.1%)

  • 11 Texas cities ranked in the top 50, the most of any state: Corpus Christi (#3), Brownsville (#4), Longview (#5), McAllen (#8), Tyler (#10), El Paso (#17), Waco (#24), Amarillo (#29), Beaumont (#41), Laredo (#44) and San Antonio (#47).

  • Florida came in second place for the most overpriced homes, with six ranking cities: Crestview (#2), Naples (#12), Cape Coral (#13), North Port (#32), Deltona (#48) and Pensacola (#50).

  • 45 out of the 50 cities are in Southern states. The five outliers include Santa Maria (#1); Salinas (#7); Yakima, Washington (#30); San Luis Obispo (#42); and Wichita, Kansas (#22).

Methodology: For this piece MoneyLion looked at the 200 largest housing markets by metro area, as sourced from Zillow's March 2026 data. MoneyLion then sourced the 2026 average home value and 2026 average median list price for each metro. MoneyLion then found both the monetary and percent difference between median list price and home values. Those 50 metros with the greatest discrepancy between median list price and home value were included in final rankings. All data is up to date as of April 30, 2026.
