Rachel Cruze recently shared what she called “unhinged” side gigs, with the disclaimer, “I’m not 100% sure these are thriving.”

But getting creative and going against the grain is one way to land on a winning idea that could earn you more than the typical side gig would.

In an age of ghosting, outsourcing breakup texts or calls might be a slightly better alternative. If you’re OK having that awkward conversation on behalf of someone else, you may be able to earn cash doing it.

Granted, this “trend” seems to have peaked in the 2010s, with companies like The Breakup Shop charging $29 for a call and $10 for a text, according to Techi.com. But maybe you can be the silver-tongued entrepreneur to bring it back.

Have a knack for Canva? Company execs and business owners may pay you to spruce up their slide deck or PowerPoint presentation.

Agencies charge as much as $5,000 for slide deck designs, while freelancers may charge between $15 and $100 per slide, according to Slidemodel.com. You should set prices based on your ability level, experience and the project’s complexity. If you’re just swapping out colors and tweaking the design for a cleaner look, you can charge less, work faster and still make decent money.

“There’s people that hire other people to roll their trash cans from the curb all the way back to their homes,” Cruze said, laughing.

Paying for a service like this would be against her frugal nature and her upbringing. However, she admitted, “This really can come in handy for elderly people, Airbnb owners or wealthy people who travel a lot.”

Expand your services to trash bin cleaning with a handheld power washer and earn an extra $30 per month or more, based on pricing at Tidy Trash Bins.

Do you have aspirations to be a motivational speaker or coach? You can get started with a side gig recording and selling custom voice notes.

“This is a step beyond fishing for compliments,” Cruze said, affirming that people will pay for positive thoughts daily, weekly or monthly.

To be successful, it helps to have a strong social media brand and following. You can sell your notes through a service like Payhip or Kajabi. You can sell packages of pre-recorded audio files or create customized packages for premium prices.

You can get paid to remove yard signs and return them to the owners, Cruze said. People who do this potentially work with landlords, real estate agents, political candidates or HOA companies.

However, this is usually part of other yard cleanup services, not a standalone gig. If you work with local business owners, including Realtors or contractors, you might offer this service as an add-on to your regular offerings.

Be skeptical of people who want to hire you to remove signs that don’t belong to them, though. Taking down signs that belong to other businesses or political candidates is illegal, according to JustAnswer.com.

Whether you opt to try one of these “unhinged” side hustles or go the traditional route, Cruze said, “[If] you’re getting out of debt or saving for an emergency fund, for a short period of time doing some extra work and making some extra income can be a world of difference.”
