Tax-Free Weekend: 4 Items Worth Buying To Save Over $200 — Most Shoppers Overlook These

You might have all the big holiday weekends marked off on your calendar, but do you know about tax-free weekends?
“Tax-free holidays allow shoppers in participating states to purchase certain eligible items without paying state sales tax,” said Elisabella Ricca, personal finance and consumer analyst at TopCashback, noting that these sales usually occur during a limited time period, such as over the course of a weekend.

Ricca went on to explain that different states offer tax-free weekends for different categories.
“Before shopping, check your state’s list of eligible items and price limits,” Ricca explained. “Tax-free holiday rules vary from state to state, so it’s important to check which items qualify and what the price limits are before you shop.”
When it comes to tax-free savings, it's best to look at items by category (especially these four groups which many shoppers overlook, but could end up saving you $200 or more).
Clothing
Ricca pointed out that buying back-to-school wardrobes for multiple kids can get expensive quickly, especially as the summer comes to an end and the school year approaches.
“Stocking up on shirts, jeans, shoes and jackets during a tax-free weekend can help families reduce the overall cost of back-to-school shopping,” Ricca said.
Computers and Technology
According to Ricca’s research, computers are one of the most expensive purchases that qualify during a tax-free weekend, which means if you have been saving up for a new one, your money might go further on a tax-free weekend.
“Since many laptops cost hundreds or even over a thousand dollars, skipping sales tax can lower the total cost by a noticeable amount,” Ricca added. “Other technology purchases such as computer software or printers can also be strategic buys during this time.”
School and Office Supplies
Along with clothing, Ricca found that school and office supplies are one of the most common items included in a tax-free holiday event.
“Some items to stock up on are backpacks, binders, pens, calculators, notebooks and more,” Ricca said. “Purchasing these items during the tax-free event can reduce the overall cost of back-to-school shopping, especially for families buying for multiple children.”
Books
Ricca pointed out that books, including required textbooks, are sometimes eligible to be tax free during these weekends. This can really help anyone interested in getting a new paperback or starting to study a new skill, especially if you are a student on a budget.
“Since some schools require students to purchase multiple novels and textbooks for the curriculum, buying them during tax-free holidays can help offset some of those costs,” Ricca explained.
