Trader Joe’s has a cult‑like following, and deservedly so, thanks to unique and delicious snacks, appetizers and pantry staples. However, just because TJ’s usually knocks it out of the park, it doesn’t mean every swing is a home run.

Trader Joe’s constantly rotates products and experiments with recipes. While that’s part of its charm, it also means some appetizers won’t resonate with shoppers, especially if texture or seasoning isn’t completely locked in for a specific dish. Now, this doesn’t mean these items are universally hated, but they tend to generate more complaints than praise, especially when compared to other bestsellers.

Based on longtime shopper feedback, reviews, and common complaints, here are four Trader Joe’s appetizers shoppers say you may want to skip, plus why they don’t live up to the hype.

Trader Joe’s still offers plenty of party‑ready favorites, but if you’re planning a gathering or stocking your freezer, skipping these can save you money and snacktime disappointment. Sure, on paper, these sound like a slam dunk as they are crispy mini tacos that are easy to bake and perfect for dipping. In reality, shoppers often say they’re dry, bland, chewy and underfilled.

Many shoppers say they rely heavily on sauces to make them edible, which isn’t ideal for something meant to stand on its own. The last thing you want is too much shell that doesn’t crisp up.

  • Price: $5.49

Fried cheese in any form is usually a guaranteed party hit, but Trader Joe’s version of the mozzarella stick frequently disappoints shoppers who expect restaurant-quality from the microwave. This may be a polarizing choice for this list, but to be fair, they are often viewed as having overly thick breading as well as a plasticky, oily texture.

Though some customers love them, Trader Joe’s Breaded Mozzarella Sticks are highly prone to exploding or leaking cheese if overcooked, which makes them a bit of a gamble. Talk about all of the grease -- and none of the flavor.

Fun in concept, but not so much in flavor execution, these Mac and Cheese bites have been through several iterations at Trader Joe’s because they keep getting complaints. One of the most common complaints about the newest version is that they tend to be a bit bland and ironically uncheesy.

A gourmet flatbread, aka fancy, smaller pizza, typically promises everything people love with cheesy, crispy, nostalgic comfort food qualities. Unfortunately, many shoppers say this particular variety misses the mark.

In fact, it’s often criticized for a rubbery texture, overpowering truffle oil and poor consistency. No matter how you slice it, this one may not be worth adding to your cart.
