4 Affordable Cities Where $3,000 a Month Covers Rent, Food and Entertainment

Things are more expensive these days. That's not shocking news, but what may be shocking is that in many cities around the country, $3,000 is enough to comfortably pay for rent, food and entertainment.
Nationwide, the median rent in November 2025, according to Apartment List, was $1,367. For a family of four, Instacart reports an average monthly grocery bill of $1,389, but this number can fluctuate between $1,100 and $1,675 based on the individual store, dietary preferences and individual needs.

With a $3,000 budget, paying the median rent and staying on the lower end of the grocery range would leave you with just over $500 for entertainment each month. But MoneyLion wanted to see if we could stretch that even further.
Our calculations for the following affordable cities are based on the average rent for each city and the average monthly grocery bill for a family of four. In these places, families can pay for rent, groceries and entertainment on a budget of $3,000 per month.
Decatur, Illinois
Decatur took the top spot on U.S. News & World Report's Most Affordable Places to Live in the U.S. in 2025-2026 list. The cost of living in Decatur is 21% lower than the national average, according to Payscale, with housing 49% lower and groceries 4% lower. Average rent is $925.

Oklahoma City
Average rent estimates in Oklahoma City vary between $1,096 and $1,350, but we'll go with the lower estimate. Groceries are 5% below the national average and the overall cost of living is 18% lower.

Bismarck, North Dakota
Bismarck ranked first on WalletHub's list of cities where rent is more affordable. The median rent is $1,210 and overall cost of living is 10% lower than the national average. Groceries are only 1% lower, but that still leaves a nice cushion for entertainment.

Pittsburgh
If you're looking for a larger city where $3,000 will cover rent, groceries and entertainment, Pittsburgh might be it. The overall cost of living and groceries are only 2% below the national average, but if you're frugal in other areas and take advantage of free events in the city, you might be able to make the budget work.
