5 AI Side Gigs That Could Actually Be Worth Your Time in 2027

Every week brings another pitch promising easy money from artificial intelligence (AI). Most of it is noise, and some of it is outright nonsense. The real side hustles aren’t about chasing the flashiest tool. They’re about finding a specific problem AI can handle faster than you could alone.
The five gigs below pass that test. Each uses AI to do the heavy lifting while a human supplies the judgment, expertise or local know-how software can’t fake. Some are easy to start, while others reward years of hard-won expertise.

Here’s what’s actually worth your time in 2027.
1. AI Automation
AI is great at repetitive tasks. The catch is that most businesses don’t have the time to figure out how to use it. That’s where freelancers come in.
Deepanker Mahajan, founder and CEO of SkillDrift, a career management platform, recommended helping small businesses set up AI tools inside systems they already use.
“Connecting an AI assistant to a firm's email, bookings or customer records still needs a person who understands how that business runs,” said Mahajan. “Many small businesses, such as a dental practice or a real estate office, have one repetitive task that takes hours every week.”
Getting started doesn’t have to be expensive. According to Mahajan, you just need a laptop and the paid plan of one or two AI and automation tools. The real investment is your time. You may also have to do your first few jobs at a lower rate so that you have work to show prospects, he added.
2. AI Training
AI companies need people to train models and evaluate AI-generated work. If you have specialized knowledge, this one is worth a look.
Ilia Lotov, founder and managing principal of Kaizen X Capital, explained that professionals in finance, law, data science and sales can help models learn the structure, format and language of their fields, along with the nuances of real-life work.
“Many AI companies are paying substantial amounts for high-quality, human-generated data, as well as hiring experts in their fields to generate new content or assess AI content,” Lotov said.
Getting started costs very little. What Lotov said you need is real expertise, which usually takes years to build, plus attention to detail and the ability to explain what makes an output good or bad.
3. AI Search Optimization
More people now ask AI tools for recommendations instead of scrolling through search results. Matt Goren, founder of RunOctopus, sees an opportunity in helping businesses show up in those answers, starting with the information AI systems pull from when someone asks for a referral.
“More customers now ask ChatGPT or Google's AI, ‘who's the best plumber near me?’ and go with the three or four names it gives,” Goren pointed out. Yet most owners have never checked what the AI says about them.
“Someone who checks and fixes what the AI reads is doing work owners will pay for,” he added.
Startup costs are minimal. Goren suggested finding prospects by checking which businesses AI tools currently recommend, then showing owners how they stack up against their competitors.
4. AI-Assisted Content Creation
AI can speed up research, scripting, narration and editing, which makes it a strong tool for creators producing video and other content.
John Franco, CEO of GreenTek Roofing & Solar, said he earned $46,000 over one year creating faceless YouTube videos with AI tools as a side hustle.
“This job is for everyone,” he said. “The only human skills needed here are creativity, judgment and a bit of patience.”
He also stressed that it’s not easy money. The AI tool helps with research and creation, but human oversight and input are the most important parts of the job.
“Human input matters. Your creativity and judgment are your capital,” he said.
5. Building Niche AI Tools or Apps
You don’t need to be a developer to build a useful AI tool. The smartest approach is to build around skills you already have.
Headshot photographer Kristina Sherk used AI to create GenerAItion Headshots, a headshot generator drawing on her 20 years of photography experience. The tool lets her automate parts of her process, serve more customers and charge less per shoot.
“I was shocked at how easy it was to create something just using my imagination and Claude’s coding skills,” Sherk added. Currently, she’s working on two more photo editing projects.
The Bottom Line
Nobody needs a computer science degree to cash in on this. What these five gigs reward is knowing a specific problem well enough to fix it. Pick the gig that fits what you know, land one or two clients and build from there.
