4 Appliances Experts Say Are Better Bought Refurbished

New appliances aren’t always better. In some cases, their refurbished counterparts are just as good, but available at a fraction of the cost.
You might not be able to distinguish between a brand new item and its refurbished twin. Items are cleaned, tested, repaired and repacked before they’re put back on the market, making the price tag the only noticeable difference.

“I am a big believer in buying reconditioned appliances whenever possible,” said Matthew Morrison, an appliance repair expert at JustAnswer. “Most often, the unit has some minor cosmetic flaws or failed early within the original warranty coverage and now has new replacement parts.”
Here’s a look at four appliances people often regret buying new. Take note and buy refurbished versions instead, so you can enjoy the same item at a deep discount.
Robot Vacuum
Investing in a robot vacuum can be a major timesaver. Despite that, you don’t need a brand new model to keep your floors clean.
“With the constant updating of technology and features, new models lose value almost immediately after use,” Morrison said. “All the replaceable components wear at the same rate, whether the unit is new or used.”
For example, a brand new iRobot Roomba Essential Vacuum Cleaner — model number Q0120 — is $127 on Amazon. However, Amazon also sells the exact same model refurbished for $89.95.
High-End Blenders
A blender can be a kitchen staple, so buying a quality brand can pay off. However, instead of buying a brand new top-tier blender like a Vitamax or Breville, opt for a refurbished unit, Morrison said.
“These models are well designed for durability,” he said. “Factory reconditioned models come with upgraded components and warranties.”
For example, the Vitamix Alta Pro Blender is $387.99 at Walmart. However, you can get a refurbished Vitamix blender of the same model for $349.95 on Amazon.
Luxury Espresso Machines
They might seem like a good buy in theory, but many people don’t use espresso machines as often as they think — and they lose value as soon as they’re removed from the box, Morrison said.
“Refurbished units are descaled, tested and often come with a new warranty,” he said.
For example, The Barista Express Espresso Maker — model number BES870XL — by Breville is $699.95 at Macy’s. This same model espresso maker is available refurbished on Amazon for $459.27.
Cell Phone
In his experience, cell phones are the one product clients most regret not buying refurbished, said Chris Diodato, CFP, founder and CCO at WELLth Financial Planning.
“Compared to major appliances, cell phones depreciate extremely fast and don’t have a useful life beyond a few years,” he said. “Buying a refurbished phone easily saves someone 30% in most cases, and these devices often come with the same warranties as new phones.”
For example, a black iPhone 16 starts at $799 at Apple. However, you can get an unlocked, refurbished iPhone 16 starting at $375.69 on Amazon.
