Finding a new car under $30,000 that's actually worth owning isn't easy.

Chris Pyle, an auto expert at JustAnswer, cut through the noise and identified five that deliver real value. We’re talking good fuel economy, solid reliability and no nasty surprises down the road. Let’s d(r)ive in!

The Civic has been one of the best cars on the market for nearly two decades, according to Pyle.

It gets excellent fuel economy, handles family needs well enough and comes without a mountain of expensive extras baked into the price. The interior is a little snug (both for passengers and luggage), but it gets the job done. Crash test performance is strong.

At under $30,000 brand new, it remains one of the most straightforward buys in the segment.

The K4 is newer, so it doesn't carry the track record of some others on this list. But Kia has been building credibility in recent years when it comes to longevity and the overall cost to buy and own. Pyle preferred the sedan over the hatchback.

Most of what applies to the Civic applies here too. The Camry is reliable, family-friendly and fuel-efficient. The catch: to get it under the $30,000 mark, you need to be selective with options and resist the upgrade temptation. Go in knowing what you want and stick to it.

According to Pyle, SUVs “are all the craze” right now, and the Tucson is one of the better affordable ones. It's a compact SUV, but it looks sharp and keeps getting better each model year. Fuel economy is strong for the segment. Pyle noted that Tucson owners come back to the shop infrequently — which is the kind of track record that matters most over time.

The Crosstrek stands out for fuel economy and versatility. It's all-wheel drive, so it handles light off-roading without complaint. The ride feels sporty, the front seats are comfortable and the center entertainment system is well-done.
