In many ways, cash has gone the way of the dinosaur, and for younger audiences, it's a form of paper currency that results in a direct exchange, with no digital footprint. That is why in the world of credit cards, Venmo and tap‑to‑pay everywhere, cash-only payments can be coveted for bringing in some quick passive income.

Whether you’re looking for a side hustle, same‑day pay or a way to make money without waiting on a paycheck, these cash-based purchases open the door to getting paid on the spot. Here are four things Americans still pay cash for and how you can turn them into a fatter wallet.

"When you're rummaging through someone's front lawn looking for hidden treasures, carrying a stack of bills just makes sense," said finance expert Jeff Rose, founder of Good Financial Cents.

Not only can you flex your bartering muscles, but most transactions flow more smoothly and have a better chance of being discounted if the exchange is done in cash. It’s beneficial for both the buyer and seller, in a way that the government doesn’t have to know about.

"Cash transactions here make it easy for both buyer and seller to negotiate and seal the deal without the hassle of digital payments."

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of strolling through a neighborhood farmers market like you’re Don Corleone picking only the finest fruits and vegetables. However, if you want quick and easy exchanges, cash is king.

"There's something wholesome about buying your apples and zucchini with a few crumpled bills," Rose said. "Farmers often prefer cash to keep things simple and because it's immediate -- no waiting for a card transaction to go through or losing a percentage to card fees."

If you are looking to make some quick cash, being a vendor at these markets can be quite lucrative without having to worry about transaction fees. Outside of stuff from your garden, you can sell anything from flowers to homemade crafts.

Whether you are waiting tables, bartending, housekeeping or even dog walking, cash is just faster and better for a lot of reasons.

"Guests want to show gratitude for the service housekeepers provide," said Shavon Roman, personal finance expert at Heal Plan Invest. "But the workers are often not present to receive tips directly. Leaving a cash tip of $5 to $20 per day of stay is an accepted way to say thank you for their hard work."

On the flip side, if you sought out a side gig as a doorman, mowing lawns or babysitting, they most often rely on cash tips as part of their regular earnings. Paying with cash is typically expected for these flexible side hustles, which makes it easy for both payer and payee.

On-site parking at concerts and games is often run by small operators equipped to take only cash. It’s pretty easy and great money if you have access to spots or plots of land near popular event spaces. Collecting payment and keeping vehicles moving is handled most efficiently with cash transactions.

"Cash is the most accessible form of payment," Roman said. "Whether attending a concert, sports game or celebration, many event parking venues are managed by on-site operators without electronic payment devices."

Event parking can range from $10 for small gatherings to $50 or more for major venues and cities. That’s per car, so wherever people are willing to pay for convenience, you could rake in a pile of cash.
