Costco vs. Sam's Club: Which Store Has the Better Prices on 5 Fall Basics?
When it comes to fall basics like pumpkin, does Costco or Sam’s Club offer the better deal? To find out, we compared current listed prices on five seasonal staples so you know where your money will go further this fall.
1. Hot Cocoa: Sam’s Club
Hot cocoa is a must when the weather starts cooling down in the fall. A 50-count box of Swiss Miss Milk Chocolate Hot Cocoa Mix costs $9.78 at Sam’s Club, which comes out to a little less than 20 cents per packet. At Costco, the same 50-count Swiss Miss package costs almost two dollars more at $11.49, or 23 cents per serving.

2. Pumpkin Pie: Sam’s Club
No fall is complete without pumpkin pies. And though you can get affordable pumpkin pies from both Costco and Sam’s Club, one place is usually cheaper than the other. Costco’s famous Kirkland Signature pumpkin pie weighs 58 ounces and costs $6.80. Sam’s Club also sells a comparable 58-ounce Member’s Mark pumpkin pie, but it’s slightly less expensive at $5.98

3. Russet Potatoes: Sam’s Club
Potatoes are a fall staple since you can use them to make all kinds of cozy dishes, as well as soup and stew. Costco sells a 10-pound bag of baking potatoes at $6.35, whereas Sam’s Club sells 10 pounds of russet potatoes for just $5.12.
4. Butter: Costco
Fall is a perfect time to start trying new baking recipes before the holiday season begins. And to bake, you’ll need butter. A 4-pound package of Kirkland Signature salted sweet cream butter is $10.88 at Costco or $2.72 per pound.
At Sam’s Club, 4 pounds of Member’s Mark salted sweet cream butter costs $10.96 or $2.74 per pound. Costco wins this round, but only by 8 cents.
5. Brown Sugar: Sam’s Club
Another baking staple is brown sugar. At Sam’s Club, 7 pounds of Member’s Mark light brown sugar costs $6.98 or 99 cents per pound. At Costco, 7.5 pounds of organic brown sugar costs $11.99 or $1.60 per pound. Although Costco’s version is organic and slightly larger, Sam’s Club is much cheaper on a per-pound basis.
The Winner: Sam’s Club
Across this five-item fall basket, Costco narrowly wins on butter, but Sam’s Club comes out ahead on hot cocoa, potatoes, pumpkin pie, and brown sugar. So, if you want to stretch your fall grocery budget as much as possible, Sam’s Club has the edge in this comparison.
