10 US Dimes That Are Worth Way More Than 10 Cents

It’s said that dimes make dollars, but according to the 2026 Rare Dimes Worth value guide, the right Roosevelt dime in the right condition can fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars at auction. That said, most dimes in your change jar are exactly what they appear to be; however, knowing which ones to set aside is the whole game.

Before anything else, keep in mind that Roosevelt Silver Dimes minted from 1946 through 1964 contain 90% silver and are worth well above face value at current silver prices. Even a worn example is typically worth more than two to three times that, and high-grade examples can reach $25,000 or more.

Here are 10 U.S. dimes that have some additional value due to their rarity or uniqueness.

Because only two known specimens exist, Rare Dimes Worth confirms that one of these dimes sold for $506,250 at GreatCollections in October 2024. That makes this the most valuable modern dime in existence. If you ever come across a 1975 proof dime without the "S" mint mark, you may have just found something extraordinary.

The 1968-S Roosevelt Dime without the mintmark ("No-S") is a proof error coin that can be highly valuable. Since its inception in 1986, the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) has certified only 18 1968 No-S Proof Dimes. Heritage Auctions sold one specimen for over $40K in 2008.

The key date of the Mercury Dime series. According to Gold Silver Stacks' 2026 value guide, worn examples can be worth $800 to $3,000, while pristine uncirculated examples can reach upwards $55,000 to $87,500 with Full Bands designation. Low Denver mintage makes this one of the most pursued dimes in American numismatics.

If you are a collector, then you are probably familiar with this holy grail of U.S. dimes. Only 24 were ever struck (and just 9 are known to survive). In fact, one sold at Heritage Auctions in January 2025 for $2,160,000. Talk about a stack of dimes.

The only variety of a dime from 1965 was the one without a mint mark produced by the Philadelphia Mint -- but a lot were minted. Some 1965 Roosevelt Dimes, in excellent condition, can go for over $1,000, but most are worth 20 cents to $2.50, per the experts at Ned Ludd Coins. Those made of silver have sold for thousands of dollars.

Some dimes from 1982 and 1983 were minted without a mint mark, and these varieties can be of interest to collectors. In particular, some 1982 dimes struck at the Philadelphia Mint dated 1982 were struck by an obverse die that didn't receive a "P" mint mark.

Expect to buy or sell these for around $65, though uncirculated examples can reach $175. 1983-S Roosevelt dimes were struck only as proof coins (finished to showcase), making them rarer than regular dimes from the time.

The 1996-W Roosevelt Dime was a special issue to mark the 50th anniversary of the Roosevelt dime design. Its limited mintage (1.457 million) makes it relatively scarce. They were included in 1996 uncirculated sets specially for collectors. This is still the only non-bullion coin ever issued at the West Point facility, according to Gainesville Coins.

A true oddity. The Philadelphia mint made over a billion dimes in 1998, so even an uncirculated coin from this year can be yours for a couple of bucks. According to Stack's Bowers Galleries (where this stack of coins paperweight was sold for $9,200), a minting error resulted in this, "a hefty group of approximately 32 distorted dimes bonded together as a result of a malfunction of a coinage press."

This is the single most valuable dime ever sold in U.S. history, according to Rare Dimes Worth, and is the one known example sold for $3.6 million at Heritage Auctions in January 2023. This isn't something you'll find in pocket change, but it earns its spot on any list of valuable dimes.

A new one to watch is the special Emerging Liberty design, which was issued to mark the U.S. 250th anniversary. A standard circulated version is worth face value, but the gold W mint mark tribute version (MS70/PF70) is projected at $1,200 or more, and a silver proof (PF70 DCAM) is estimated at $150 to $200.
