Dollar Tree vs. Aldi: Where $50 Goes Farthest in 2026

Money is tight for many shoppers in 2026. Dollar Tree and Aldi are often go-to stores for discounts on quality goods.
So we put them head-to-head and asked Melissa Cid, a consumer savings expert at MySavings.com, which store stretches a $50 budget the farthest.

Groceries
Cid, who also is a mother of four on a tight budget, noted that it might be assumed Dollar Tree would always come out ahead. But, when you factor in unit prices, she crowned Aldi as the clear winner across the board for groceries such as peanut butter, canned foods, bread, chips and cereals.
"At Aldi, I can spend $50 and walk out with real meals to feed my large family for the week," Cid said, adding that Aldi also carries more of the ingredients you actually need to make meals, including fresh produce, meats and eggs.
"It is also worth noting that Aldi is mostly private label store brands, which is one of the reasons prices are lower, while Dollar Tree carries more well known name brands in smaller sizes."
Household Items
Where Dollar Tree really shines is in household and personal care items, according to Cid, who found that hand soap and bar soap are often cheaper there.
Aldi’s Lacura 50-ounce hand soap refill costs $2.99, while Dollar Tree frequently carries smaller 32-ounce refill bottles for $1.25 that still come out cheaper per ounce, Cid said.
She said, “Bar soap is another easy win. It’s also cheaper at Dollar Tree: Dove 2.6-ounce bars for $1.25 each or two for $2.50, compared with Aldi’s Lacura moisturizing beauty bars, which cost about $3.29 for a two-pack.”
Cid also found that Dollar Tree has some of the best prices on household cleaners, such as 64 ounces of bleach for $1.50, compared with 120 ounces at Aldi for $6.79.
“Even if you buy two bottles at Dollar Tree," she said, "you’re still saving well over 50% compared with Aldi’s price."
Budget Shoppers Use Both Stores
While Dollar Tree may feel cheaper at checkout, Cid pointed out that “the reality is that what you buy will be gone much faster because the package sizes are smaller. For some products, you really need to buy two items to get the same ounces you would get from a single Aldi purchase.”
Cid highlighted that Aldi is the clear winner when it comes to grocery items, while Dollar Tree wins for cleaning products, personal care, party supplies and smaller snack packages.
She concluded, “Most budget shoppers, myself included, will use both stores strategically to really stretch their budget as far as possible."
