Dented and scraped in the accident, the Model S's battery later caused the insurance company to render the vehicle a total loss.

Some damaged EVs may be declared a total loss because the battery pack is designed to be part of the structural floor or chassis, per Total Loss Appraisals. If the battery is damaged or its condition cannot be determined, insurers may have little choice but to write off the vehicle.
