Filling Up on Gas Is Cheapest on Sundays in These 13 States

What’s going on with the price of gasoline? It’s a question drivers find themselves asking all too often (including right now) as gas prices continue to soar across the country. The spike in prices at the pump points to the ongoing war in Iran, which has largely choked off supply to the U.S.

The unpredictable and often unbelievably expensive cost of gas is a significant hurdle for Americans. With prices so high not only on gas but on other essentials, including food, many of us are forced to choose between filling our stomachs and filling our tanks.

There’s only so much we can do to cut the cost of gas, and most budgeters know the tried and true ways to save, such as using the app Gasbuddy to find the cheapest gas stations in one’s area and taking advantage of any gas discounts that warehouse club memberships extend.

To maximize savings at the pump, it’s crucial to know which day of the week is the cheapest day in your state to buy fuel. A new study by Delancey Street analyzed daily gas price data from GasBuddy across all 50 states to find the cheapest day to fill up in each. Delancey Street researchers calculated the average price per gallon for every day of the week, then identified which day consistently delivered the lowest price.

Here are the 13 states where Sunday is the cheapest day to buy gas. The average price in these states is about $3.10 per gallon, according to Delancey Street’s analysis. For additional context, we included the average price per gallon for each fuel type in each state, based on AAA data from Thursday, June 11, 2026. States are listed in alphabetical order.

Delancey Street’s analysis didn’t dig into the driving forces behind the data or provide an explanation as to why Sunday is the cheapest day to buy gas in these 13 states. So why is this the case? It points to price-cycle timing, which gas stations use across the U.S. One local gas station will raise prices on its gas by about 20 or 30 cents per gallon, prompting others to raise prices on their supply.

Over the next few days, gas stations will gradually lower their prices by a few cents here and there to stay competitive.

It looks like in these 13 states, the price cycle reaches its weekly low on Sunday, making it the best day for local drivers to fill up the tank.

Methodology: This study analyzed daily gas price data for all 50 U.S. states to identify the cheapest day to fill up in each state. For each state, the average price per gallon was calculated for every day of the week, and the day consistently offering the lowest prices was determined.
