Americans shopping for new cars this year are keeping fuel efficiency top of mind.
Gas costs have significantly increased since the start of the United States-Iran war, with CNBC reporting gas is $3.98 per gallon nationwide as of late March. This is a 35% increase compared to the prior month.
Fortunately, shoppers aren’t without affordable options. A February 2026 Cars.com analysis revealed 12 vehicles boasting base prices under $35,000 and excellent fuel economy for buyers on a budget. Most notably, every vehicle mentioned is a hybrid and half the cars in the ranking are Toyota models.
