Interest rates, geopolitical unrest, break-the-bank grocery prices — the American cost of living is really putting a squeeze on the average worker’s paycheck. It can sometimes feel as if a check isn’t enough to cover a single pay period. There are ways, though, to stretch your paycheck that don’t require a radical overhaul of your life or finances.

I recently asked the AI chatbot ChatGPT to suggest ways to make the most of a paycheck, and it responded with a number of simple (but surprisingly effective) ways to make your money go further.

Here's the plan it laid out for me.

Rather than save whatever is left over after paying your bills, ChatGPT suggested flipping the process and allocating money for savings the second the paycheck hits your bank account. Even if it’s only for $25 or $50 that gets auto-transferred to your savings, it allows you to build a savings off your paychecks.

Whenever you’re tempted to make a purchase when that money first hits your account, hold off. Specifically, wait at least 24 hours. You’d be surprised just how often the urge to buy something unnecessary disappears if you give it a day.

Paying your bills right away gives you a clearer sense of just how much money you actually have left, which can prevent you from accidentally spending money that’s already spoken for in terms of bills.

As ChatGPT pointed out, generic grocery brands and the more popular name brands are often made in the same factories — by switching to many of the cheaper, more generic brands, you can cut your grocery bill nearly in half.

Instead of trying to optimize and decrease your spending all at once — which can feel like a shock — consider doing it a step at a time. For instance, each month cancel or downgrade just one subscription service that you barely use. By the end of the year, you’ll be saving a shocking amount of money and will barely notice.

Try negotiating for a lower monthly internet, insurance or phone bill. It may not seem like much at first, but recurring savings can beat one-time cuts by year’s end.

Often, instating savings or financial cutbacks can seem daunting, because people assume massive lifestyle overhauls will be required. Instead — as ChatGPT has pointed out — a number of smaller changes can be instituted that have larger and longer-lasting results over time. These surprisingly simple changes can have a big impact on your paycheck and how long you can make each one last.
