Here's How Much a Comfortable Retirement Costs in Each State in 2026

Retirement isn’t a one‑size‑fits‑all number, even if you have $1 million in the bank. In fact, you might get financial whiplash trying to navigate the wildly changing costs of becoming a comfortable retiree in 2026. The biggest price tags, such as housing, healthcare, taxes and the overall cost of living, will vary by location and your unique situation.
That’s why understanding how much money you need to retire in each state has become one of the most important steps in intermediate to professional retirement planning. Whether you’re approaching building your nest egg decades ahead, or tightening some bolts on your retirement accounts for when you leave work next year, knowing the true cost can help you set realistic savings goals, maximize Social Security and avoid unpleasant surprises later in life.

Here is a state‑by‑state look at how much a comfortable retirement actually costs, no matter where you land, and how much you have to save monthly (assuming you are counting on collecting Social Security) to reach that goal. States are ranked from highest cost of living to lowest.
Key Findings
In 13 states -- Hawaii, California, Massachusetts, Washington, New Jersey, Colorado, New Hampshire, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, Alaska, New York and Connecticut -- it costs more than $100,000 a year to live comfortably in retirement.
The current average monthly Social Security retirement check is approximately $2,079.49. Unfortunately, this won’t cover your retirement costs fully in any state if you're looking to live a certain lifestyle.
You can retire comfortably in Kentucky, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and West Virginia if you start saving at least $1,500 every month from age 20 onward.
If you’re starting your savings journey at age 30, you would need to set aside at least $2,000 a month to live in Iowa, Alabama, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and West Virginia.
Savings and cost of living are calculated after Social Security is factored in. The average annual Social Security benefit is $24,894.

Methodology: For this study, MoneyLion found total population, population ages 65 and over, total households and household median income (via the U.S. Census American Community Survey). The cost-of-living indexes were sourced from Missouri Economic and Research Information Center for 2025 and the national average expenditure costs for retired households came from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Survey. The average home value was sourced from Zillow Home Value Index. Using the national average 30-year fixed mortgage rate of 6.11, as sourced from the Federal Reserve Economic Data on Feb. 11, 2026, the average mortgage was calculated for each state. Using the average mortgage and expenditure costs, the total cost of living for necessities was calculated. Using the 50/30/20 finance rule that states needs should not exceed 50% of household income, the total cost of living for necessities was doubled to find the comfortable cost of living. Using the average monthly Social Security income for one retired worker, the total cost of living comfortably after Social Security income was calculated for each state. Assuming a person retires at 65 and lives to 85, 20 years of retirement was calculated. Assuming a person starts saving at 20 or 30 years old, the monthly amount needed to retire with and without Social Security income was calculated for each age. All data is up to date as of Feb. 11, 2026.
