Discover a Walmart in a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania suburb right before opening in the morning for customers.

When it comes to buying staples in bulk, it’s hard to beat Costco for its sweet deals — assuming one has the space to store the mega-sized haul. That said, the temptation to shop with a well-priced competitor like Walmart — whose slogan, “Save Money, Live Better” plays out with dependable discounts — can be strong for shoppers who want the freedom to buy bulk and fresh items like meat, cheese and vegetables in one shop.

At Costco, a 10-pound bag of Quaker Oats Old Fashioned Oats is a bargain compared to the similar batch at Walmart, which costs more twice as much. When it comes to bulk pantry items like this, it could be worth it to save restocking breakfast for one big monthly Costco run.

These applesauce pouches that come in a 24-pack are a parent favorite, as they are a healthy, easily transportable, on-the-go snack. Given that kids suck these down at supersonic speed, stocking up at Costco makes sense, as it's much cheaper than two 12-packs of organic applesauce sold at Walmart.

  • Walmart’s price: $21.68

Jasmine rice — a versatile ingredient that can fill out many meals — can go a long way if you buy the right amount. You can get 25 pounds of rice for just under $28 at Costco, while a 20-pound bag Walmart (the biggest size we could find) clocked in at $22.42. For $5.57 more, you can take home an extra 5 pounds from Costco.

  • Walmart’s price: $26.98

Costco wins again in the price game for a two-pound bag of Peet’s coffee beans, selling the batch for $1.99 less than Walmart.
