It’s always going to be a little cheaper to shop at Old Navy versus the Gap, but even we weren’t ready for these savings.

Let’s say you have just $100 to build an outfit. We put together a casual spring women’s ensemble consisting of a button-down top, jeans, a pair of loafers, a belt and a bag at Old Navy and Gap. Only sale items were sourced via Old Navy’s sales and a few Gap promotions, which included limited time and final sales.

The total cost of our Old Navy ensemble came out to about $94. Meanwhile, the Gap outfit cost $161.

What did we pick and how did we stay on budget? Keep reading for a price comparison at both retailers.

We started with denim before any other item of apparel or accessory because of its ubiquitous nature. (There’s a 99.9% chance both retailers carry straight leg jeans.)

Already inexpensive at $34.99, Old Navy gave their straight ankle jeans a 30% discount and marked 'em down to $24. The slim straight jeans at Gap were $44 after 50% off.

We can’t speak for all shoppers, but we feel confident most will choose a 30% off markdown over 20%, especially on similar styles.

The same shopping showdown applied when considering the classic shirts sold at Old Navy and Gap.

An Old Navy button-down shirt discounted by 40% comes out to $17.99, while Gap’s poplin top went from $59.95 to $35 after applying a 40% off promotion.

Old Navy also benefits from having a wide range of patterns on sale compared to just black and white sold at Gap.

Timeless footwear for less than $30 can be found only at Old Navy. The 30% sale applies on their faux-leather loafers.

Gap’s vegan suede loafers come very close to being the better deal for your money. Originally $59.95, the shoes are marked down to a final sale price of $44.97 with an extra 40% at checkout. However, this still comes out to an estimated difference of $15. Plus, there’s the added hurdle of limited sizes being available.

Whether you call them tote or bucket bags, this roomy accessory is the catch-all for carrying a little bit of everything, like laptops, books and extra flats to wear at the office.

Gap loses out to Old Navy in this category, offering its vegan suede bucket tote bag for 50% off at $37.

The medium Carrie tote bag is already a good deal at Old Navy at $36.99, but 40% off propels it into must-buy territory.
