I Asked ChatGPT To Plan a 7-Day Summer Vacation for 2 for Under $1K — Here's the Full Itinerary

You’ve got a lot going on this summer. Work and home are vying for your last nerve. Planning a low-budget vacation feels like yet another source of stress instead of relaxation. A few friends have mentioned using AI to plan their itineraries, so you’re curious if it could work for you.
Fortunately, your friendly neighborhood financial writer — that would be me — decided to try out ChatGPT’s vacation-planning abilities for you. I asked the AI to plan a seven-day vacation for two people for under $1,000. To test its capacity to customize planning, I even told it the truth: I don’t like hiking or camping.

Without further ado, here’s what it came up with.
Budget-Friendly Coastal and Small-Town Escape for Two (Under $1,000)
Understanding that I wasn’t exactly the woodsy, outdoorsy type, the AI generated a budget-friendly itinerary focused on relaxation and scenic beauty. I wasn’t mad at the beach days and bookstore trips it added, either.
Day 1 — Annapolis Getaway
First, ChatGPT took me to Annapolis for a relaxed waterfront day.
Things to Do
Walk the harbor
Browse boutiques and bookstores
Eat crab cakes by the water
Watch sailboats at sunset
Optional harbor cruise
Budget
Hotel/motel: about $80
Food: about $40
Parking and extras: about $15
Good Cheap Eats
Dockside seafood spots
Ice cream on Main Street
Casual brunch cafés
OK, ChatGPT, this is a lovely way to kick things off.
Day 2 — Rehoboth Beach
Next, ChatGPT suggested packing the car for a drive to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. I was a fan of most of the summer activities it planned — though I’d probably skip the arcade games and pocket that money.
Relaxed Summer Activities
Beach day
Boardwalk snacks
Arcade games
Brewery patios
Sunset strolls
Budget
Motel: about $90
Food: about $45
Beach supplies/snacks: about $20
To help me save more money, ChatGPT recommended staying 10–15 minutes outside downtown for cheaper lodging.
Day 3 — Lewes and Cape May Ferry
For day three, the AI had me heading toward Cape May, New Jersey, via Lewes. I’m a little worried about how much time I’m logging on the road, but let’s see what else ChatGPT suggested.
Morning in Lewes
Coffee shops
Small galleries
Waterfront picnic
Take the ferry to Cape May
Great Low-Effort Activities
Victorian streets
Winery or brewery
Beach lounging
Sunset cocktails
Mini golf
Budget
Ferry tickets for two and car: about $80
Motel: about $85
Food: about $45
After a day of travel, this set of plans is right up my alley.
Day 4 — Full Relaxation Day in Cape May
Whew — today I got to stay in place. ChatGPT had me stay in the same lodging without taking on a lot of new activities.
Ideas
Beach umbrella day
Breakfast cafés
Dolphin-watching cruise
Antique shopping
Sunset at the promenade
Budget
Food: about $50
Optional cruise: about $40–50 for two
Lodging: included
I didn’t know dolphin-watching cruises were a thing outside tropical resorts, so I’ll definitely do some independent research into that.
Day 5 — Chesapeake Bay Area
I’m back on the road, heading through the Chesapeake Bay region. ChatGPT said it picked this drive south for a “quieter day around the bay.”
Activities
Scenic coastal drive
Seafood lunch
Waterfront parks
Local breweries
Sunset picnic
Budget
Gas/tolls: about $35
Lodging: about $75
Food: about $40
Day 6 — Spa and Slow Day
Spa day? ChatGPT, I like the way you think. The AI built a recovery day into my schedule with a few affordable suggestions.
Activities
Couples spa specials
Pool day
Coffee shop hopping
Farmers market
Thrift/antique stores
Sunset dinner
Budget
Spa or activity: about $60
Food: about $45
Lodging: about $75
Day 7 — Scenic Drive Home
For my final day of vacation, ChatGPT suggested an “easy drive back with flexible stops.” These stops included places like retail outlets, roadside seafood (questionable, but noted), farm stands (that’s more like it), or bakeries.
The AI had me budgeting about $20 for gas and $35 for food.
The Bottom Line
For a very general outline, I’m relatively pleased with what ChatGPT suggested. That said, it did put me on the road a lot, and with gas prices trending in the wrong direction, I’d probably modify my prompt to stay in the same location for most of the trip.
It’s also worth noting that several costs, especially lodging and ferry prices, can vary significantly depending on timing, location and availability, which could push the total budget higher in real life.
It’s a worthy reminder that AI doesn’t always have the full context; it can be great as a springboard for ideas, but I should do my own research.
