I Negotiated 5 Bills This Summer — Here's the Script That Saved Me $840

Like many of you, I’ve got some goals for the summer. I want to stay as cool as possible. Ideally, I’d enjoy a few cost-effective trips to the beach. Mostly, I’m eager to save as much money as possible by negotiating the costs of a few major bills. If I could shave around $800 or so off my expenses, I’d be breathing easier.

But like many of you, I’m not exactly sure which bill companies to approach or what I should say to them. That’s why I asked my buddy Claude for help. I prompted the AI to identify five bills I could negotiate to save a little more than $800 — and to give me the exact scripts to use.

Given that my biggest expense every month is rent, it’s not surprising that Claude suggested targeting a reduction of between $50 and $150 per month from that bill. After sharing that the prime time to make the ask is when my lease is up for renewal, Claude gave me this script:

“Hi [Name], I wanted to reach out before my lease renewal. I've really enjoyed living here and want to stay, but I've seen comparable units in the area listed for $[X] less per month. I'm hoping we can find a number that works for both of us — would you be able to renew at $[your target price]? If a price drop isn't possible, I'd love to talk about other options, like a waived amenity fee or a free month.”

Notably, Claude’s script wanted me to come prepared with the prices of comparable units, so I’ll need to do my research before sending this request.

Claude estimated that using this script could save me between $20 and $40 a month on my cable and internet costs:

“Hi, I'm calling about my account, [account number]. I've been a customer for [X] years, but I noticed new customers are getting [competitor]'s plan for $[X] less than what I'm paying. I don't want to switch, but I need my bill to be more competitive. Can you match that rate, or is there a retention promotion you can apply to my account today?”

What should I say if the rep says no? Claude was prepared for that, too. Here’s what the AI told me to say:

“I understand. Can you transfer me to the retention or loyalty department? I'd like to explore my options before deciding whether to cancel.”

Auto insurance is another major drain on my monthly budget — but I’ve got to have it. Claude recommended I try this script so I could potentially save between $200 and $400 a year.

“Hi, I'm reviewing my policy, [policy number], before it renews. I've gotten quotes from [competitor 1] and [competitor 2] that are about $[X] less for similar coverage. I'd like to stay with [company] since I've had a good experience, but I need a better rate. Are there discounts I'm not currently getting — like bundling, low mileage, defensive driving, or paying in full — that could bring my premium down?”

Again, I’ll need to do some research before I contact my current company, but it could be well worth the effort.

My cell phone plan could be eating up more of my earnings than Claude would like. So, the AI gave me a script that it estimated could help me save between $15 and $30 a month:

“Hi, I'm calling about account [account number]. I've been a loyal customer for [X] years and I'm considering switching to [competitor] because they're offering [X] for less. Before I do, I wanted to see if there's a current promotion, loyalty discount, or plan change that could lower my bill. Is there anything you can do?”

I like how this script is assertive without being aggressive. I don’t want to enter these conversations from a heated place, so this direct yet neutral tone works well.

Claude thought using this script could potentially help me save between $10 and $30 a month.

“Hi, I wanted to talk about my membership before it renews. I've noticed I'm not using the [pool/classes/etc.] as much, and I've seen other gyms nearby offering lower rates for similar access. Is there a lower-tier plan, a freeze option or a loyalty discount you can apply so I can keep my membership active?”

Before concluding, the AI offered me a few other general tips to get the best results when making these calls or sending these messages:

  • Always ask for the retention or loyalty department by name — front-line reps often can't approve discounts.

  • Have competitor quotes ready before calling; specifics make the ask credible.

  • Calling near a renewal or contract date, rather than midcycle, gives you the most leverage.

This is good advice. Thanks, Claude.

With some willingness to do a little research in advance, I can use Claude’s scripts to negotiate down some common bills. Though the exact amount I could save will vary, every little bit helps.
