The Costco Car Buying Program: Is It Actually Worth It?

Nobody enjoys being taken advantage of at a dealership, but it’s almost inevitable for most people.

After spending hours negotiating and haggling over numbers (this process is designed to wear you down) and agreeing on a price, you get slapped with fees, accessories you did not ask for, a protection package that somehow appeared out of nowhere and about six million other things that are confusing and probably not financially beneficial.

The opposite of that experience is the appeal of the Costco Auto Program. It's meant to give members access to prearranged pricing through participating dealerships, which can make the buying process feel much less exhausting (and stressful).

But does Costco actually save you money or does it simply save you from negotiating? Find out below.

Costco doesn't sell the cars themselves but instead refers members to approved dealers who agree to offer member pricing on eligible new and select used vehicles.

The benefit of Costco’s program is that you won’t be walking into the showroom starting at MSRP and hoping for mercy from the dealership; you are supposed to receive a Costco-specific price sheet with the discount already factored in.

Costco also offers separate limited-time incentives that can be combined with manufacturer rebates. These are great deals and can make the car-buying process much more affordable.

Main Pro

Main Con

Costco Auto Program

Prearranged pricing

Not always the absolute lowest price

Direct dealer negotiation

Potentially better savings if you shop aggressively and know what you’re doing

Requires way more patience and knowledge

Sometimes, but not always. Realistically, a great negotiator who contacts several dealerships, requests written out-the-door quotes and makes dealers compete by sharing those quotes with one another will probably be able to save a lot more money than by going with the Costco program alone.

But most people get too overwhelmed by the constant back-and-forth negotiations, so they accept the first small discount or opt for monthly payments instead of calculating the total cost of the car. For these people, Costco’s auto program will help immensely.

Also, it’s important to note that Costco’s pricing is usually strong, especially on vehicles that dealers are less likely to discount heavily on their own.

So even if you don’t need to use their program, it can give you a good baseline of prices and allow you to use that quote to judge whether another dealer is actually giving you a better deal.

As wonderful as Costco is, it cannot eliminate certain fees and costs, such as taxes, title and registration, financing charges or dealership documentation fees.

You also need to be wary of dealer-installed extras, which are almost always unnecessary. Floor mats are one thing, but mandatory appearance packages, VIN etching, nitrogen tires and overpriced protection plans are another.

The vehicle’s price may look good, but the out-the-door price is what matters most.

Basically, the Costco Auto Program is a good place to start, but you’ll still need to be diligent, because in this industry, buying with minimal effort can cost you money.

Costco savings vary by model, location and the dealership involved. Some buyers may see a discount of about $1,000. Others can do better when a Costco manufacturer incentive runs at the same time. For example, as of May 2026, Costco’s limited-time specials include the following.

Select new Volvo models

Up to $2,000 for Executive Members; up to $1,500 for Gold Star and Business Members

2026 Chrysler Pacifica or Voyager

$1,250 for Executive Members; $1,000 for Gold Star and Business Members

Select new Chevrolet commercial trucks

$3,000 for Executive Members; $2,750 for Gold Star and Business Members

It’s a good idea to check the Costco Car Buying Program before you make a purchase, as it can reduce negotiation stress and give you a solid price baseline.

But it’s not a magic coupon for the cheapest car. You still need to compare offers, question fees and evaluate the full out-the-door price.
