Those who are struggling to find a new job might find better-than-projected employment numbers a bit hard to believe, if only because the job market may still seem hard to crack.

Employment grew by 62,000 jobs in March, according to a report from ADP. That’s a number that might not indicate a booming market, but it is significant growth. Perhaps most important to note, though, is that just two employment sectors accounted for all of those job gains in March.

Specifically, new positions in the health services and construction fields provided nearly all of March’s employment gains.

Anyone searching for a job should consider applying within those fields. You do not need to completely overhaul your career focus or undergo vocational retraining if you’ve never worked in healthcare or construction before.

Healthcare demand is on the rise as the growing population ages, lives longer and requires more services across longer timelines. As a result, this sector is especially resilient to economic changes, geopolitical tumult, political upheavals and unstable job markets.

Many positions in health services don’t require specialized degrees. There are administrative jobs and support roles there that can offer a way in and even lead to long-term employment and stability. Be on the lookout for such roles as office administration, bookkeeping, janitorial and assistant positions as a way in.

Elsewhere, as the Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported, the construction world is experiencing significant growth thanks to several interrelating factors: A shortage of skilled labor, fast-paced technological expansion, the growth of renewable energy, the increased need for artificial intelligence data centers and expanding electric vehicle infrastructures.

Construction is one of those fields in which “entry level” can mean a lot of different things, with many positions not requiring prior experience — just reliability and a willingness to learn. For instance, general laborers are always in demand on construction sites, and it’s a position that comes with daily, on-the-job training.

Further, there are almost always apprenticeships in various sub-fields like electrical, plumbing and carpentry. There are also — much like health services — administrative and office positions available, too. Not every construction position requires manual labor or mechanical operation — bookkeepers, accountants, office administrators and assistants are just as necessary in construction as they are in any other business.

The current job market may not be booming overall, but it’s not stalling if you know where to look. Hiring is still happening, but in a very targeted way, with health services and construction doing almost all of the heavy lifting. If you’re on the job hunt, consider directing your search to these high-growth sectors.
