5 Most Affordable International Destinations for Fourth of July Travel

Summer travelers face several challenges this year, most having to do with high prices and geopolitical tensions.
If you’re looking for an affordable vacation outside of the United States, you’ll probably need to stay pretty close to home.

Here’s a look at the five most affordable international destinations for Fourth of July travel.
Summer Outlook
The main headwind facing travelers this summer is fuel costs. Although the price of gasoline has come down in recent weeks, it’s still up by over 20% from a year ago, according to the latest AAA data. Diesel prices have risen by more than one-third, which has pushed airline prices up as well.
Despite those headwinds, summer travel plans for Americans remain “resilient overall,” according to a recent survey from Bank of America -- at least for those with the money to afford it.
Its 2026 Summer Travel Outlook report found that 30% of respondents say higher gas prices won’t change their summer travel plans. Others aim to take fewer trips or cut back on lodging and other items.
Meanwhile, nearly 40% of lower-income Americans have no travel plans at all.
For international travel, most survey respondents favor either Europe or non-U.S. North American destinations this summer.
Most Affordable International Destinations for Fourth of July
If you’re looking for a comparatively cheap international destination this Fourth of July, Europe is probably not the best option. Instead, you’ll mainly want to fly south, according to a recent Dollar Fight Club analysis.
Dollar Fight Club looked at the most affordable Fourth of July international getaways based on airfares. Four of the destinations are in North America/Caribbean, while the other is in South America.
Here’s the list (prices are as of June 10, 2026):
Monterrey, Mexico: Flights starting from $163
Vancouver, Canada: Flights starting from $170
San Jose, Costa Rica: Flights starting from $264
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic: Flights starting from $288
Cartagena, Colombia: Flights starting from $331
According to Dollar Fight Club, the routes that head south “burn less fuel and still have open seats,” meaning they’ve held their Fourth of July prices better than most big U.S. cities. All of the five destinations listed above are cheaper than flying to U.S. cities such as Philadelphia or Washington, D.C., for Fourth of July.
Tips for Affordable Fourth of July Travel
If you want to score the best deals over the Fourth of July, Dollar Fight Club offers these recommendations:
Travel on off-peak days. This means flying midweek rather than on the weekends.
Use fare alerts and monitor them closely. Many Fourth of July fare drops last less than 12 hours and “disappear even quicker.” When signing up for alerts, keep checking them regularly.
Fly into nearby airports. This can save money vs. flying into main hubs. Flying into or out of a secondary airport can “cut costs by hundreds of dollars.”
Read the total fare. Bag fees and surcharges have been on the rise, which means the price you see might not be the price you actually pay. Be sure to add up baggage, seat selection and surcharges before comparing different fares.
