Buying a three-year-old used car used to be the sweet spot for savings while still scoring a relatively new vehicle. In today's market, that no longer holds. Right now, some of the biggest car-buying bargains are current-year used cars -- models that are barely driven yet selling for thousands, and sometimes tens of thousands, less than their brand-new counterparts.

New data from Edmunds shows just how dramatic the shift has become. By the end of 2025, nearly 1 in 12 used vehicles sold was from the current model year, and those nearly new cars averaged more than $6,000 less than the price of buying new. For certain models, the savings are far larger -- making them some of the smartest buys in today's car market.
