These 8 NYC Private Schools Now Cost Over $70K — More Than the Average Salary

The cost of attending an elite New York City private school now rivals what the average American earns in a year. According to Bloomberg, eight NYC private schools will charge more than $70,000 in tuition this fall on par with the U.S. average annual salary of $69,847, based on the latest Social Security Administration (SSA) data.

Across 15 private schools in Brooklyn and Manhattan, the median tuition increase is about 4.7% from the previous year, the report found. Private school tuition has increased dramatically over the past decade, with the average cost at $40,000 in 2014.

"Of course, sending a kid to private school in New York City has always been expensive, but with costs this high, even people who make well above average salaries say they're feeling squeezed," said Erin Hudson, municipal finance reporter at Bloomberg.

However, for some wealthy families, tuition reaching $70,000 isn't a breaking point.

"Consultants who advise families who want to send their kids to private schools say [it isn't]," Hudson said. "They say parents will pay, no matter how high the cost."
