For this study, MoneyLion analyzed the average cost of Thanksgiving dinner for 10 people for 2026. We referred to the American Farm Bureau Federation’s 2025 Thanksgiving Dinner Cost Analysis to source the average price for 11 items, including a turkey (16 lbs.), cranberries (12 oz.), sweet potatoes (3 lbs.) and pumpkin pie mix (30 oz.). The other key items noted in the methodology below include carrots and celery, green peas, pie shells, cube stuffing, dinner rolls, whole milk and whipping cream. The cost of each Thanksgiving dinner item was increased by 2.2% to reflect the average 2026 prices per the Bureau of Labor Statistics showing this percentage increase in grocery food items at home.
These 11 items were calculated using the grocery cost of living index to reflect their average price in each state and the total was summed to show the average price of Thanksgiving dinner for 10 people in every state and sorted in order of states with the highest to lowest average cost for Thanksgiving dinner.

The average price for 11 items was sourced from the American Farm Bureau Federation's 2025 Thanksgiving Dinner Cost Analysis. The Bureau of Labor Statistics shows a 2.2% increase in grocery food items at home, so each of the 11 Thanksgiving dinner items were increased by 2.2% to reflect the average prices for 2026. Using the Missouri Economic Research Information Center, the cost-of-living indexes were sourced for each U.S. state. Using the grocery cost of living index, each of the 11 items were calculated to reflect the average price of each grocery item in each state. Each of the 11 items were summed to show what the average price of Thanksgiving dinner would be for 10 people in each state for 2026. The states were sorted to show the largest average cost for Thanksgiving dinner.
A number of factors for each state were sourced as supplemental information, including from the U.S. Census including total population, population ages 65 and over, population ages 16 and up, population ages 16 and up employed in civilian labor force, civilian labor force unemployment rate, mean income and percent distribution for family households, mean income and percent distribution for family households with no earners, mean income and percent distribution for family households with one earner, mean income and percent distribution for family households with two earners, mean income and percent distribution for family households with three or more earners, median household income, mean household income, total households, per capita income, households with social security income and mean social security income for households that receive it, households with retirement income and mean retirement income for households that receive it, households with public cash assistance and mean public cash assistance for households that receive it, households with SNAP benefits, households with investments. Using the Zillow Home Value Index, the average August 2026 single family home value was sourced for each state. Assuming a 10% down payment and using the national average 30-year fixed mortgage rate of 7.40%, as sourced from the Federal Reserve Economic Data on Oct 13, 2026, the average mortgage was calculated for each state. The cost-of-living indexes were sourced from the Missouri Economic and Research Information Center for each state. The national average expenditure costs was sourced from Bureau of Labor Statistics and using the cost-of-living indexes, the average expenditure costs was calculated for each state. Using the average expenditure and mortgage cost, the total cost of living for necessities was calculated for each state. Using the 50/30/20 finance rule that states that needs should not exceed 50% of median household income, the cost of living for necessities was doubled to find the comfortable cost of living for each state. All data is up to date as of October 13th, 2026.
