You don’t have to sink yourself into auto loan debt to own a new car. Those shopping for brand-new vehicles will be pleased to find the six cars mentioned in this roundup have starting prices of $30,000 or less for their latest models.

We sourced each car’s 2026 starting price (and in some cases, 2025 MSRP) from Kelley Blue Book (KBB) and the vehicle’s 2026 reliability ratings from RepairPal's filtered scores of 4.5 or greater. Each is a great buy, depending what features you're looking for.

Ranked from cheapest to most expensive, these six cars are worth the investment for budget drivers.

Don’t judge a book by its cover or a Kia Soul by its offbeat appearance. This surprisingly spacious vehicle ranks number one for subcompact SUVs with KBB and is the cheapest car in this ranking with an MSRP under $22,000 for the 2025 model.

And it won’t break the bank to pay for repair costs, should you need any. According to RepairPal, Kia Soul owners spend around $437 annually on repairs.

  • Starting Price: $25,890

Chances are good you’ve driven or owned a Honda Civic in your lifetime. The affordable compact car benefits from being fuel-efficient and offers plenty of interior space, making it an ideal — and popular — purchase for new drivers as well as those with decades of experience on the road. Annual repair costs are even cheaper than those associated with the Kia Soul, totaling $368 on average.

The first of two hybrid cars in this ranking, the Toyota Corolla Hybrid is as fuel-efficient as it is affordable to purchase. Depending on where you look, it’s possible to find a starting price for just under $25,000 quoted for the 2026 Hybrid LE model, while KBB says the 2025 starts at $24,920.

How do the average repair costs shake out? Expect to pay around $362 annually, according to RepairPal.

  • Starting Price: $26,695

KBB ranks the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid as its second cheapest hybrid after the Toyota Corolla Hybrid.

And while the average repair cost is $452 — more than any other vehicle mentioned so far — this hybrid vehicle remains a driver favorite thanks to its excellent fuel economy and ability to tackle everyday travel with ease.

  • Starting Price: $28,445

The roomy two-row Subaru Crosstrek is one of the most affordable SUVs for off-road adventures. And even though the average repair costs amount to $492, the Crosstrek has serious bragging rights with its resale value. When it’s

time to sell your Crosstrek, KBB said owners could receive up to $6,000 in returns.

  • Starting Price: $29,590

The 2026 Honda Accord barely makes the $30,000 cutoff, but we’re happy to see it here.

Rated the best midsize car by KBB, the Accord joins the Crosstrek as another affordable vehicle with excellent resale value. Owners can plan to budget around $400 of annual repairs, which RepairPal noted is a lot less than the typical average repairs of $526 for most midsize cars.
