6 Side Hustles Actually Paying Off in 2026

Taking on a side hustle might be unavoidable these days, but that doesn’t mean necessity can't be fun — or lucrative.
According to Andrew Lokenauth, founder of the blog Fluent in Finance, the side hustle landscape shifted hard this year, and artificial intelligence is at the center of it.
The shift comes as about one-third of Americans have a side hustle. If you’re looking to pick up one this year, here are six of them that are actually paying off in 2026.

1. AI Prompt Engineers
Per Lokenauth, AI prompt engineering pays $80 to $175 per hour currently because businesses are desperate for people who can make their AI tools produce real results. In this role, someone optimizes instructions for AI models in an effort to guide them toward producing better outputs.
“I wrote about this in my newsletter and the response was massive,” he said. “Most people had no idea this skill was worth that much."
2. Copywriters
All of the experts who talked to MoneyLion called out different types of writing as good side hustles that can pay well. According to Lokenauth, freelance copywriting is surging.
“These skilled writers can pull in $150 to $250 per hour because strong human writing with a real brand voice is now more valuable in an AI world, not less.”
3. Writing Coaches
If you’re not into the sales aspect of copywriting, perhaps try going the writing and essay coach route.
“You can work as a writing coach for college applications from anywhere,” said Marguerita Cheng, certified financial planner (CFP), CEO of Blue Ocean Global Wealth. “My client offers these services and she can balance it with her full-time job.”
4. Digital Product Creators
If you’re a creative person looking for a side hustle, try working on digital products.
“Niche newsletters, Notion templates and online courses are generating real passive income,” Lokenauth said. “Finance and business newsletters command the highest ad rates and some creators are clearing $5,000 to $7,000 per month.”
5. Event Musicians
One way to handle a side gig is to do it on the weekends when you’re not at your full-time job.
“Event musicians can charge high hourly rates,” said Melanie Musson, a finance expert with Quote.com. “If you are skilled and build a good reputation, you can charge $1,000 or more for a weekend wedding. If you’re just starting out, you can likely find gigs willing to pay $30 to $50 an hour.”
6. Vacation Rental Cleaners
If you like to clean, why not turn your enjoyment into a side hustle?
“Vacation rental cleaners can charge more than the average house-cleaning rate because of the inconvenience of irregular hours,” Musson said. “Sometimes a vacation rental has to be cleaned in the morning for an afternoon check-in and the day of the week can vary.”
Or strike out and find an untapped field for your own benefit. There's a lot of opportunity yet for innovators.
"The insight most people miss is that the best side hustle isn't the one with the highest ceiling," Lokenauth said. “It's the one you can start monetizing in the next 30 days using skills you already have.”
