6 States Where Older Workers Face the Toughest Job Markets

Working into your 60s and beyond is becoming more common across the U.S. According to the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics data, a record 11.6 million Americans ages 65 and older are now part of the workforce.

But for older adults planning to keep working, job opportunities aren’t equal everywhere. Where you live can play a major role in whether it’s easy — or more challenging — to find and keep work later in life.

A recent CareScout study looked at all 50 states across several aging- and workforce-related indicators, including the share of adults ages 60 and older who are working or actively looking for work.

States with lower labor force participation rates may point to fewer opportunities, more barriers to employment or local job markets that are less accommodating to older workers.

Here’s a look at the six states with the lowest share of adults ages 60 and older in the labor force:

  1. West Virginia: 22.3%

  2. Arkansas: 22.8%

  3. Oregon: 26.1%

  4. New Mexico: 26.2%

  5. Arizona: 26.3%

  6. Kentucky: 26.3%

For workers approaching retirement age, these rates can matter. States with stronger participation rates may offer more flexibility, while lower-participation states could present a more competitive or limited job landscape.
