5 States With the Lowest Rates of Remote Work for Older Americans

A record 11.6 million Americans ages 65 and older are still working — up 132% over the past decade, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

For many, retirement is no longer a clear endpoint. Several forces are keeping older Americans in the workforce.

"People are living longer, which is prompting people to rethink their time in the workforce relative to retirement," said Catherine Collinson, CEO of the Transamerica Institute.

"We’ve also experienced a major societal shift where people are expected to self-fund a greater portion of their future retirement than past generations, so they need to save more," she continued. "Many are finding themselves in a situation where they’re concerned they haven’t saved enough or they’re afraid they may run out, and they continue to work."

For those staying in the workforce, remote work can offer the benefit of flexibility without the strain of a traditional 9-to-5. But access to these jobs isn’t equal across the U.S.

A recent CareScout analysis found wide gaps in remote work access for Americans ages 65 and older, with some states offering far fewer opportunities than others.

Here are the five states where older workers are least likely to have remote, location-flexible jobs, ranked by the share of workers ages 65 and older with these roles.

  1. North Dakota: 6.6%

  2. Mississippi: 8.5%

  3. Arkansas: 9.2%

  4. Louisiana: 9.9%

  5. Iowa: 10.2%

Limited access to remote roles can make it harder for older workers to reduce commuting costs or stay in the workforce longer.
