3 SUVs That May Actually Appreciate in Value Over Time

SUVs aren’t built like they used to be. While mass production has increased the number of SUV makes and models on the market, it has also made older, more reliable models more attractive.

Here are three SUVs that may actually appreciate in value over time.

The Ford Excursion maintains its value thanks to its truck platform, towing capacity and engine. Early Excursion models were built with a 7.3-liter diesel engine and an F-250 chassis. Stricter emissions and fuel economy regulations make the Excursion an attractive investment. If you have the opportunity to purchase an Excursion, expect it to hold its value and maybe even appreciate.

“The Excursion hasn’t been manufactured for years, but it’s a diesel truck with seating for a large family,” said Melanie Musson, auto industry expert with AutoInsurance.org. “There’s nothing else like it on the market and they’re in high demand. If you buy a used model now, you’ll probably be able to sell it in a couple of years for what you paid for it or more.”

The 2015 Jeep Wrangler features a sought-after 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine and a unique frame designed for off-roading. With a loyal Wrangler enthusiast base, inventory shortages on new models and mechanical reliability, the 2015 Jeep Wrangler could continue to appreciate over time.

“You can get a pretty good deal on a Wrangler that’s over 10 years old. It’s already experienced the most significant depreciation and will hold its value well,” said Musson. “If you got a good deal on it, it may be worth more in a couple of years than what you spent on it. Wranglers are timeless, so they don’t go out of style and look dated even when they’re old.”

Toyota Land Cruisers from the 1990s are known for their indestructible build quality and simple mechanics. This is appealing to owners who want a reliable vehicle without the fancy technology and its associated glitches. Finding a clean, well-kept '90s-era Land Cruiser is also difficult. If you do happen to find one, it could increase in value over the next few years.

“New Land Cruisers maintain their value well, but a vintage Land Cruiser is practically a collectible,” said Musson. “If you buy a 30-year-old Land Cruiser and take care of it, it may be worth more than you paid for it in a few years.”
