The 4 Target Clearance Secrets That Save You 70% Every Time

More than three-quarters of the U.S. population lives within 10 miles of a Target store, according to the company website, and it’s a pretty safe bet that most customers go there in search of a deal.
But while you can find deals any day of the year at Target, it takes some strategizing to score the really big discounts.

Here are four Target clearance secrets that can save you 70% off the regular price.
1. Pay Attention to the Day
Most Target markdowns happen on Mondays or Tuesdays, while clearance tags are typically printed on Wednesdays, according to a blog from The Krazy Koupon Lady. The deepest discounts – including those 70% and higher – are typically offered on items that don’t sell with smaller discounts.
Not all stores or even employees follow the same schedule, however. To find your store’s markdown routine, The Krazy Koupon Lady recommends checking the shelf tag. You should see the markdown date printed on it, which shows when the discount was applied.
2. Also, Pay Attention to the Date
As The Krazy Koupon Lady noted, Target’s yearly clearance schedule is more predictable than its weekly markdown schedule. This gives you an advantage when it comes to planning for 70% clearance sales.
Here are some of the key dates to keep an eye on to get discounts of 70% or more:
Holiday clearance: Mid-December through early January, with 70% to 90% off of holiday décor, gift sets and season items.
Semi-annual toy clearance: This happens twice a year: late December through mid-February, and mid-June through early July. You’ll find discounts of up to 70% off toys.
Sporting goods clearance: Mid-January through late January, with up to 70% off clearance bikes, scooters, large toys and other sporting goods.
Valentine’s Day clearance: The week following Valentine’s, with up to 90% off candy and themed gifts.
Easter Clearance: The week or so following Easter Sunday, with discounts of up to 90% off Easter items.
Summer and patio furniture clearance: Usually the final three weeks or so of July, with up to 70% off garden items, plants, swimwear, outdoor toys, summer apparel and patio furniture.
Home clearance: Usually the last 10 days or so of September, with up to 70% off clearance kitchen items, cookware, storage, appliances and bedding.
Halloween clearance: Late October through early November, with up to 70% off costumes and candy.
Target also holds storewide clearance sales in February and March that offer discounts on many different items, though you might not find as many items marked at 70% off.
3. Check the Sticker
Consumer Affairs recommends checking the little number in the upper-right corner of the clearance price sticker, which will read “15,” “30,” “50,” “70,” or “90.” These numbers represent the percentage off the original price and let you know how far along the item is in the markdown process.
“When you see something on clearance and it’s only marked down by 15% or 30%, know that it will get marked down further if it doesn’t sell out,” Consumer Affairs noted.
4. Roam the Whole Store for ‘Hidden’ Clearance Items
Clearance sections are “not always where you think,” according to Consumer Affairs. Instead of looking at the obvious places, like “endcap” displays at the end of aisles, check throughout the store.
Here are some spots you might find deep clearance discounts:
Dedicated clearance endcaps in each department.
Random endcaps scattered throughout aisles.
The back wall of clothing departments.
Mixed right into the regular racks and shelves.
The back walls in women’s, men’s and kids’ clothing departments are “especially good,” according to Consumer Affairs, because that’s where 50% and 70% off racks are often located.
