Shopping for a used car is a good financial move, but it's often nerve-wracking because you don't know the vehicle's history. Was it in a car accident? Did the owners take care of it? Was it properly serviced? Buying a used car can feel like you're taking a leap of faith, but there are ways to reduce the risk.

You can request a vehicle history report, have the car inspected by a trusted mechanic and stick with brands that have proven long-term reliability.

Below are three SUVs that Christopher Alfieri, service manager at CarCare and CarSmart, said are so safe and top quality that he would confidently recommend them to his own mother.

Toyota is a brand built to last, and the 4Runner has always been a standout SUV. According to a December, 2025 report by Consumer Reports, Toyota is the No. 1 most reliable brand, and the 4Runner is an SUV Alfieri recommends.

"This SUV has become synonymous with longevity, thanks to Toyota's meticulous refinement of its engine and drivetrain over the past decade," he said. "Few vehicles can claim to go over 200,000 to 300,000 miles with the right care, but the 4Runner is one of them."

With an annual maintenance cost of around $514, per RepairPal, the 4Runner is affordable and a trustworthy choice for buyers who "want endurance without compromise," Alfieri said.

For drivers craving a touch of luxury alongside reliability, the Lexus GX is another used SUV Alfieri said is worth purchasing.

"This midsize SUV is renowned for its high-quality construction and minimal breakdowns -- service facilities report seeing these models primarily for routine maintenance rather than repairs," he said.

Since Lexus and Toyota share engineering, the GX delivers Toyota-grade performance and dependability, but with higher-end features and designs.

For a cost-effective but reliable option, Alfieri said the Honda CR-V is an excellent choice for a used SUV and a reliable staple in the SUV market.

"As a compact crossover that blends modern design with proven reliability, the Honda CR-V frequently surpasses 200,000 miles on the odometer with ease," he said. "Known for its low incidence of significant issues and substantial resale value, it's a practical choice for families and commuters."

There's no shortage of options when it comes to buying an SUV, but according to car experts, not all are worthy of your hard-earned money.

"If a deal seems too good to be true, it likely is," Alfieri said. "Spending a bit more upfront can save on repairs over time."

To improve your odds of buying the right SUV, Alan Gelfand, owner of German Car Depot in Hollywood, Florida, said long-term durability often comes down to how a vehicle was treated before it ever hits the used market.

"My decades of experience in SUV sales and maintenance have shown that vehicles that receive regular maintenance and avoid towing duties and modifications will become the most durable long-term options," he said.
