A new luxury SUV, while perfectly suitable as a family vehicle, can often be a bit too expensive for the average American family. Insurance costs, maintenance fees, the price of fuel, not to mention the monthly loan payment – all of these add up quickly and break the bank.

That’s why any frugal shopper looking for a large vehicle should consider a used SUV as an investment for their family, rather than a brand-new luxury ride right off the lot, since buying a used model helps you avoid high depreciation rates.

As Andrew Izyumov, founder and CEO of the investment and portfolio tracker 8Figures, told MoneyLion, “luxury SUVs typically depreciate significantly, often losing 40% to 50% of their value in the first few years. Purchasing a used vehicle allows the initial owner to absorb this loss, preserving your capital for higher-yield investments.”

After consulting a number of auto and financial experts, MoneyLion identified five used SUVs that are the best investments for families in 2026.

  • Starting price for 2016 model: $15,000

“The MDX offers a fantastic balance of a lower up-front cost and long-term reliability,” Izyumov said of Acura’s SUV, adding that it offers three rows of family seating and a low rate of mechanical failure.

Rayan Salata, marketing director of Specialty Auto Parts USA, added that the MDX “meshes Honda reliability into a luxury package. It has a 3.5L V6 engine, gets about 26 mpg combined, and comfortably seats seven. It shares parts with the Honda Pilot, which keeps its maintenance costs low.”

  • Starting price for 2016 model: $16,000

“The RX series is recognized for its strong resale value in the luxury midsize segment, and the 'L' version provides a valuable third row for families,” Izyumov noted of the sleek Lexus SUV. “Its naturally aspirated V6 engine avoids costly turbocharger repairs common in other luxury brands, supporting stable household cash flow.”

Additionally, Matt Clamp, automotive specialist with Scrap Car Comparison, called the RX “one of the safest choices in the SUV market. It’s one of the most dependable luxury models, with many comfortably running beyond 200,000 [miles] with regular maintenance. For families, it provides a smooth ride, a quiet cabin and a wide boot for all the storage you need.”

  • Starting price for 2016 model: $11,000

Clamp also had much to say about the Volvo XC90, describing it as “one of the best options for families who prioritize safety.”

In addition to its high safety ratings, Clamp described it as “a true seven-seater – perfect for those with big families – and it has a well thought-out interior, including family-focused touches like integrated booster seats.”

  • Starting price for 2016 model: $12,000

Looking for a reliable luxury SUV with low depreciation? Izyumov recommends the BMW X5 because “early depreciation has significantly reduced the MSRP, and this powertrain is known for its long-term reliability. It offers luxury and performance with manageable maintenance costs.”

  • Starting price for 2016 model: $18,000

“The Highlander seats three rows and gets an impressive combined 30 mpg,” said Salata of Toyota’s hybrid SUV. “Its hybrid system helps reduce brake wear, while also keeping the rest of the SUV reliable with minimal surprises when it comes to bill paying.”
