Discover a green sign along Interstate 5 welcoming travelers into Oregon as they are leaving California

There’s one state where Americans need to earn nearly $150,000 to bring home $100,000 -- and no, it isn’t California or Hawaii. Oregon surprised by ranking first out of the 50 states in a new MoneyLion analysis, revealing a single filing taxpayer’s income must be $147,437 before taxes to net six figures.

To determine the salary amount to net $100,000 in every state, MoneyLion surveyed income taxes, including FICA, at the federal and state level. We used an in-house calculator for a taxpayer filing their taxes as a single person and the standard deduction with 2025 tax brackets. Once the three income taxes were calculated as an annual amount, we found each state’s total annual income taxes paid and total income tax burden.

Methodology: To generate the income for what it takes to bring home a $100,000 salary by state, MoneyLion surveyed income taxes at both the federal and state level (including FICA). Income tax estimates were created by using an in-house calculator for a person who was filing as a single person and using the standard deduction (with 2025 tax brackets). Once the three income taxes were calculated as an annual amount, MoneyLion found each state's total annual income taxes paid and total income tax burden. All data was collected on and is up to date as of April 29, 2026.
