How To Be Your Own Boss

Tired of answering to someone else from 9 to 5 or want to gain freelance income on the side? Here are some ventures you can pursue to create your own wealth and be your own boss.

Try an Online Course

There are plenty of online courses where you can get certifications and training. You can learn creative software such as Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator, or even how to code. There are thousands of opportunities to work independently and remote when you gain marketable, sought-after skills like coding and designing.

If you’ve always wanted to learn a new skill, now is the time! You can find extremely cheap but incredibly valuable courses on Udemy, Skillshare, and LinkedIn Learning. Many of these courses will give you lifetime access to the course as well as a certification.  Remember, you have to invest in yourself before people will invest in you.

Sell a Product or Service

Online marketing is a great way to gauge interest and promote your business. Before starting, survey a group of your target audience to see if they like your product. If they would spend money on it, then you know you’re off to a great start.

If you are proficient in a particular skill, look into ways you could profit from it. Maybe you like to clean or organize. If so, you could start a home-cleaning and organizing business. If you love dogs, look into starting your own doggy daycare or dog-walking service. If you are crafty and can create handmade goods that people love, sell them online. Is there a skill you have at work (such as writing, designing, or calculating) that you could translate to your own consultancy or freelance business?

Start a Blog

Research a niche you’re interested in writing about. This could be travel, fashion, cooking, or lifestyle. Then break down your niche from there and try to make it more specific. This will allow you to stand out in a very saturated market. Once you have your topic, plan out your first 10 blog posts, then have at least 5 written before you launch. This will ensure there’s plenty of content for people to browse when they come to your site.

The more you write and market your blog, the more you can get offered paid sponsorships and advertisements. It doesn’t happen overnight, but with consistency and actually doing the work, you can see the results.

Become an Influencer on Social Media

Many people pair their blog with their social media presence, but you don’t have to have a blog to be an influencer. You’ll still need a niche and a personal brand, but once you’ve done your homework, you can begin creating content. Keep in mind that because of the Instagram algorithm, you have to post informative content regularly that people are engaging with, otherwise Instagram will hinder your reach to your target audience.

Once you’ve established your presence online, expect to get emails from brands to post their products on your feed. It’s perfectly ok to do this for free at the start. Think of it as building your resume. However, as your audience following and engagement increases, you’ll need to begin setting your prices and making money to support yourself and your business.

Get Involved in Real Estate

There are so many ways to make money by working in real estate. Start off getting your real estate license. You could sell homes part-time at first, then slowly work your way into full-time. Being a real estate agent is a great way to make side income until you can afford to quit your other job.

Once you become knowledgeable of the housing market, you could even begin to buy homes, flip them, and then sell at a higher price. Or, instead of selling, rent out the home to tenants or promote on hosting websites such as Airbnb. If that’s a bit too risky for you, do you have an extra room to spare? You could always rent out one room to make extra money.

Do Odd Jobs or Freelance Work

If you are skilled in several areas, who says you have to do just one? Join apps like TaskRabbit that connects people like you to those who need certain tasks done. Tasks can range from a variety of things such as moving furniture or helping mount a TV. You could even use this opportunity to decide which task you excel in the most. If you find people are constantly hiring you for a specific type of job, look into doing that full-time. Are you creative? The app Fiverr tends to have more creative tasks like graphic design and copywriting.

If you’re looking for something really different, consider being a focus group participant or a luxury house sitter. These ideas are legitimate and can pay pretty well depending on the gig.

Another job that’s not so odd could be driving for rideshare apps such as Uber and Lyft. You can create your schedule and decide when you’d like to drive.

By doing these odd jobs, you can test out what you like and don’t like doing every day. From there, you can establish yourself in a particular area and begin to do that full-time.
